Richard for The Observer

“I didn’t sleep properly last night,” says Richard Madden, drinking a pint at his local. “I’m thinking it’s because I knew I was going to have to talk about this.”

“This” is an event that concerns Madden’s character in the HBO series Game of Thrones. If you’re not fully up to date with the show, scram. This is your spoiler alert. In an episode watched by half a million UK viewers on Sky Atlantic in June, Madden was killed off savagely and with so little warning that some (honestly, there’s video proof) leapt off their sofas.

In the aftermath Twitter went all capitalised and intense. US talkshow host Conan O’Brien called it “the most stunning thing any of us have seen in television. Maybe ever”. Madden, months later, says he’s still approached by the traumatised. “Just yesterday a guy came up to me, crushed. He asked, ‘Why would someone do this?'”

It’s a question, really, for George RR Martin, the American author whose novels have been adapted by HBO. Martin’s fiction takes place in a cruel, medieval-like world, where murder is commonplace. The author seems to revel in it, killing off popular, morally spotless characters knowing his readers (with their soppy, modern notions of fairness) won’t see it coming.

What it all means for those cast in the TV version is that when new episodes are hacked out of Martin’s long books, and scripts are distributed, “you get a lot of terrified actors,” says Madden, “tearing through the pages going ‘Do I die? Do I die?!'”

Madden, 27, who grew up in Elderslie, Renfrewshire, 15 miles from Glasgow, knew his character was doomed from the outset. He had worked in theatre (Romeo at the Globe) before being cast as Thrones’ youthful lordling, Robb Stark, in 2009. Senior producers admitted to Madden, early, that they couldn’t wait to get to the filming of his slaying. And on his first day on set, crew and cast approached, asking, “My God, do you know how you’re going to die?”

He managed to stay ignorant of the details for a few years. “I made a deliberate effort not to read ahead.” Madden’s girlfriend is the Doctor Who actor Jenna Coleman, so theirs is a household well practised in spoiler containment. One night, though, Madden risked a Google search …

Former Game of Thrones star Richard Madden’s new project Klondike has a trailer full of action, drama, romance and adventure.

Discovery’s miniseries stars Madden and Augustus Prew (The Borgias) as childhood best friends in 1897 who head seek their fortune in the Yukon Territories during the gold rush. The production prided itself on shooting in authentic environments and using practical effects — avoiding CGI whenever possible (so when Madden is trekking across a mountaintop or riding river rapids, he’s actually doing it). Klondike premieres in January. This first trailer looks great. Check it out below. “You either leave with your gold or with your soul.”

Show of the week: Klondike

Klondike was Discovery Channel’s first announced move into drama and was launched internationally by its Entertainment One at MIPCOM last week. Discovery has had a lot of success with unscripted shows about gold and gold digging such as Gold Rush, but this will be the channel’s first original scripted series.

Based on the Charlotte Gray novel Gold Diggers: Striking it Rich in the Klondike, the series will follow the intertwining stories of six key characters in the 1890s, seeking to make their fortunes in the gold-rich Klondike region.

Sam Shephard (Black Hawk Down), Richard Madden (Game of Thrones), Abbie Cornish (Limitless) and Tim Roth (Lie to Me) star in the show. Madden will play the youthful and idealistic Bill Haskell, Shephard Father Judge, the town’s holy man, and Roth The Count, a ruthless German seeking his fortune. Cornish stars as Belinda Mulroney, a tough mill owner. The characters are fictionalised versions of real people or composites of characters from the time.

Directed by Simon Cellan Jones (Boardwalk Empire), the series was made by eOne, Hell on Wheels producer Nomadic and Ridley Scott’s prodco Scott Free and shot in Alberta, Canada.

“Ridley Scott is a virtuoso storyteller and we thought this would be the perfect marriage,” Dolores Gavin, Discovery Channel’s executive VP of development & production and Klondike executive producer told TBI shortly after the series was ordered. Some characters are running to something and some are running from something and they all interact with each other,” explains Gavin. “It’s man versus nature and man versus himself. Some people made a fortune and some made nothing during that time and a world in microcosm was created out of nothing.”

The resulting series runs to three two-hour episodes. David Zucker, president of Scott Free’s increasingly prolific TV division says: “Each [two hours] has its own dramatic arc and definitely has a climax although they are linked in the style of the Lord of the Rings trilogy.”

He adds that although Discovery will run it as 3x120mins it would work as single hours. Speaking about the creative challenge of the series, he says: “We have tried, in one TV cycle, to capture the thrust of what happened there dramatically. There is the potential to take characters and storylines and develop them further should ratings demand a follow-up. “We do tell the complete story, but could split it into an adjoining series,” Zucker says.
