Having served time for crooked husband Roy, Ellie Lagden fits him up, helped by ex-cellmates Shoo, Hannah and Josie. Their plan is to escape to Barbados but the contact with the fake passports drops down dead. So they take their suitcase containing three million pounds to remote Scots village Hope Springs, buying the run-down hotel from Sadie Cairncross. Ellie sees this as the perfect opportunity to lie low whilst arranging new passports. Sadie’s daughter Ann Marie is not happy at the sale, nor, for undisclosed reasons is solicitor Euan Harries. Even less happy are Ellie and her friends when Euan’s tearaway son sets fire to the hotel after Ellie bars him. Village cop Gil, engaged to Anne Marie, saves Ellie but the money goes up in smoke!
Aired on June 14, 2009 – Directed by Sheree Folkson
With the cash turned to ash Anne Marie gleefully tells the girls that her mother was all set to sell to Euan. A bank loan application and attempted hold-up come to nothing, so Ellie, feeling Sadie’s lack of security was responsible for the fire, steals back the money, unaware that Sadie is hoping to buy a flat with it. Ellie stalls her by impersonating Anne Marie and telling the estate agent that her ‘mother’ is a drunk and a penniless fantasist, and this works. Sadie turns on Anne Marie and bonds with Ellie. Shoo flees to Glasgow to meet Nathan, her boyfriend, but she creams him after he has tried to rob her and hot-foots it back to Hope Springs. Unfortunately Nathan rings Lagden’s hit-man Nathan to disclose her whereabouts. The hotel bar flourishes, as does Ellie’s friendship with Gil, but she is intrigued by his interest in the recently disappeared brother of barman Dean McKenzie. Is it connected with a body hidden under the floor-boards in the hotel?
Aired on June 21, 2009 – Directed by Ian Barnes
The hotel flourishes and Ellie pays off a pernickety health inspector sent in by Euan to shut it down.Shoo gets back with Dean, causing a fight with Euan’s son Ronan but Dean gets pulled in when Shoo rings him on a phone belonging to his missing brother Billy. Euan claims that Billy murdered girlfriend Katie, Euan’s niece, though Ronan believes he killed Billy in a brawl.Dean is released and Ellie, aware that Euan is after it as well, gives the phone’s SIM card to Gil. However Anne Marie, snooping on behalf of Euan, hacks into Gil’s computer and finds that Ellie is a fraud, whilst Lagden’s deadly hitman, Marius Gruber, murders greedy tell-tale Nathan and heads for Scotland.
Aired on June 28, 2009 – Directed by Ian Barnes
Gil confronts Ellie with Anne Marie’s findings but she convinces him that she and her friends are all battered wives who changed their names after fleeing violent husbands. Panic sets in when Nathan’s murder is announced on television and they decide to leave immediately, stealing passports from lookalikes. Hannah, however, has become good friends with Euan’s wife Ina, and,as a victim of domestic violence herself, feels obliged to stay and prevent Ina from ending up like herself. The other three realize that they cannot go without her and celebrate when a further television report shows that a junkie has been arrested for Nathan’s murder, rather than hit-man Gruber. Unfortunately, he is getting ever closer to them and further disaster strikes when Sadie discovers that Ellie has robbed her.
Aired on July 5, 2009 – Directed by Dermot Boyd
When Sadie confronts her over the stolen money Ellie locks her in her bedroom, forging a card for Anne Marie to say her mother has gone to Australia. Gil marries Anne Marie but,at the reception at the hotel,Ellie overhears her in conversation with Euan, naming him as her baby’s father, not Gil. Ellie tells Gil, largely to get him out of the way when Gruber the hit-man turns up and, after Gil socks Euan, the happy couple announce that their marriage is over. Sadie escapes and kills Gruber as he is about to shoot Ellie. Having disposed of his corpse the fugitives are happy to cut Sadie in on the flight to Barbados, especially because she knows a man who can forge passports.
Aired on July 12, 2009 – Directed by Dermot Boyd
Sadie introduces Ellie to Bronius, the forger, but his price is high and Ellie challenges him to a winner-takes-all poker game, also involving Sadie, Anne Marie and Euan, who, like Ellie, cheat. Ellie and Sadie, working together, fleece Bronius, who gives the fake passports to Shoo, who hides them, but Euan tricks Ellie into gambling away the hotel to him. Ronan, bullied by his father, attempts suicide and Josie stops him. He confesses that he accidentally killed Billy McKenzie after Billy murdered Katie and threw his body in the loch. She persuades him to tell Gil, who wants the loch drained. Euan is clearly implicated and Anne Marie offers to give him an alibi in exchange for the hotel.
Aired on July 19, 2009 – Directed by Brian Kelly
Shoo, now pregnant, moves in with Dean, who finds the passports and returns them to an angry Ellie. But Shoo is not the only one reluctant to leave. Josie is in love with the countryside and has become good, platonic friends with Ronan. Hannah is a respected chef, aiming to open a cookery school with soon-to-be-divorced Ina, and she’s snogged Gil. Anne Marie, having taken the hotel back, lines up a gay couple for a quick sale to finance her move to the city. The locals are appalled that the plan is to turn it into a vegetarian gastro-pub and rebel. But it is the discovery of Gruber’s severed arm in the loch that persuades the gays to make a hasty retreat and Anne Marie cuts Euan in as her business partner. Roy Lagden watches the gruesome discovery on T.V. in his cell and informs the local police.
Aired on July 26, 2009 – Directed by Brian Kelly
Ellie and her friends tell Gil the whole story and are taken into custody. Two London detectives arrive, looking for them, but a village delegation, led by Ina and Dean – still in love with Shoo, even though she is not pregnant -impressed by the women’s influence, persuade Gil to deny all knowledge of them, after which he resigns. Euan moves into the hotel and digs up Billy’s corpse from under the floor-boards,taking it to a shed, unaware that Anne Marie is watching. The shock sends her into early labour and Ellie delivers her baby. Whilst Anne Marie is in hospital and everyone else at Ina’s divorce party Ellie finds the corpse. Euan tells her that he killed Katie, with whom he was having an affair. Billy blundered onto the scene and fought with Ronan. Ronan only stunned Billy but Euan finished him off, leading Ronan to think he was the killer, so that Euan had a hold over the boy. Euan is about to kill Ellie but is knocked out by Roy, who has negotiated a release to help the police find the missing money. Roy claims that he wants reconciliation but Ellie notices his gun,is wary and drugs his drink. Hannah sees them and calls the other women. They jump Roy and his gun goes off, killing him. This time round the girls are very good at putting a corpse into the loch. Euan is arrested on Anne Marie’s evidence. She and Gil agree to make a go of things, as he is the father of her baby, and they will run the hotel together. The villagers comfort a tearful Dean, who has lost his Shoo as she,Sadie, Ellie, Josie and Hannah escape to the Cayman Islands where they unlock Roy’s hidden millions. A closing caption tells us that they are still on the run but that the millions, and a tan, help them cope.

EW – Saturday night’s alright for fighting…and so, apparently, is any other night (or day) when it comes to the contentious professional and romantic relationship between Elton John (Taron Egerton) and his manager John Reid (Richard Madden).
Rocketman chronicles Elton John’s rise to fame from his early days as a childhood piano-playing prodigy to the peak of his fame in the 1970s and ’80s and his descent into a drug-fueled haze. The film also gave fans a glimpse into John’s fraught love life, including a toxic relationship with his manager John Reid.
In this exclusive deleted clip, tensions mount once again between the pair as they continue to fight over what’s best for Elton’s career — here, it’s whether or not to disclose his sexuality to his mother, a figure who has been a nearly lifelong source of angst for the rock star. As Elton prepares for a show, Reid corners him about coming out to his mother, even threatening to tell her himself.
“What I love about our scenes in the film is that they are two massive personalities,” Egerton previously told EW about sharing the screen with Madden. “It’s a bit like an unstoppable force and an immovable object and a lot of the conflict in the film lies there. We had great scenes to play with.” Including some that didn’t make the final cut, as seen here.
Though they’d never met before filming, Egerton and Madden became fast friends working together on Rocketman and their friendship has proved a fan favorite ever since, with the pair adorably reuniting at EW’s Comic-Con party last month.
While promoting the film, Egerton and Madden told EW they were highly anticipating the DVD bonus features, including a cut portion of their “Honky Cat” musical number. “It’s very cheeky and naughty and we had a lot of fun with it despite the logistical challenges,” said Egerton. “Richard was better at it than I was. There’s a sequence that’s cut actually, which is slightly heartbreaking because a lot of work went into it.”
The Digital, 4k Ultra HD, and Blu-ray releases boast over 75 minutes of bonus content, most notably four extended musical sequences and 10 deleted/extended scenes, including the one exclusively featured here. Other features include sing-along tracks of 13 songs; interviews with Elton John, the cast, and filmmakers; footage from recording studio sessions, as well as three featurettes exclusive to the digital release.
Watch the clip above for more. Rocketman is available on digital beginning August 6.
HYPEBEAST – The first trailer for Sam Mendes’ 1917 film has finally landed, giving fans a look at the forthcoming World War 1 epic.
At the height of the First World War, two young British soldiers, played by George MacKay (Schofield) and Dean-Charles Chapman (Blake), are tasked with crossing into enemy territory to deliver a message that will likely stop the slaughter of hundreds of soldiers; one of them being Blake’s brother. 1917 will also star Benedict Cumberbatch, Colin Firth, Richard Madden, Andrew Scott, Mark Strong, Teresa Mahoney, Daniel Mays, Adrian Scarborough, Justin Edwards, Gerran Howell, Anson Boon, and Richard McCabe. Check out the tense trailer above.
Oscar-winning director Mendes is best known for directing Skyfall, Spectre and American Beauty.
1917 lands in stateside theaters December 25, followed by a worldwide release on January 10, 2020.

W MAGAZINE – Perhaps no one has had a more famous on-screen death than Richard Madden. We are talking, of course, about the Red Wedding, the iconic season three episode of Game of Thrones, in which Madden’s Robb Stark—then, still a main character of the series—meets his untimely fate, alongside his new bride and mother, in a very bloody and very memorable end. “I think it’s going to be my favorite death,” Madden said. “Full of arrows, and then you know, you get your heart stopped, and then they cut your head off. It’s all fun and games isn’t it, just covered in fake blood and limbs hanging off. Then the fake blood take a while to get off and you’ve kind of got stained red for a while.” Rest assured, Madden soon made his return to the silver screen, as the leading man in Netflix’s Bodyguard, a role for which he took home the Golden Globe for Best Actor in a TV Series. Here, the actor talks about his on-screen fates, his first kiss, and his crush on Cameron Diaz.
What was the first thing you ever auditioned for?
My first part that I ever did actually was when I was eleven years old. I did a film called Complicity where I played a boy that gets raped and then kills his raper. I think when you’re eleven years old and you’re experiencing or acting in something that’s a sexual violence because you don’t fully comprehend sex, you don’t understand the violence of that. I’m thankful I didn’t understand so much because I think that would’ve been more traumatic to deal with.
Have you watched it recently?
I’ve not actually watched it since I was that age and remember I had to wait until it came out on DVD because it was an eighteen-plus so I couldn’t watch it because I was only twelve years old.
How did Bodyguard come to you?
The Bodyguard script arrived through Jed Mercurio who’s the writer and director I’d work with years before on adaptation of Lady Chatterley’s Lover. He sent me this script and asked me if I wanted to play this. This character, which I instantly fell in love with his complicated, morally ambiguous years, and [going] between the good and bad and not knowing whether if he’s either one of those.
The ending was very powerful.
There’s a couple of huge sequences that are hugely anxiety making for the audience and the actor playing the part, which it was at the time. They are quite difficult to shoot because it’s such a prolonged period you have to keep yourself in this high adrenaline, high anxiety state and even when you go home at night and you got eight hours until you go back to work the next day, you can’t drop it because it takes so much energy to summon yourself into that place that you go into standby mode and then you jump back into it again. By the end I was completely exhausted but it’s worth it.
You’ve died quite a few times on screen.
I love a good death and I’ve had a few really good deaths in my time. I think Games of Thrones and the Red Wedding was a pretty good one. I think it’s going to be my favorite death. Full of arrows, and then you know, you get your heart stopped, and then they cut your head off. It’s all fun and games isn’t it, just covered in fake blood and limbs hanging off. Then the fake blood take a while to get off and you’ve kind of got stained red for a while. That was the last Game of Thrones scene I shot, it was the last day on set for the whole crew, and it was the end of my journey for Game of Thrones so emotionally you had everything that was going on with the character, and then yourself where you’re saying, “Okay this is my death on the show and my death with this family and this crew that I’m with.”
Then you played Romeo, who dies also, twice.
I’ve done that twice, at twenty-one and thirty. I think I’ll never play Romeo again. And I did a World War One thing a few years ago and got shot in the head in that one. That was a good death.
EW – The Marvel Cinematic Universe just got a little bit bigger.
During Marvel’s presentation at San Diego Comic-Con on Saturday, Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige teased new details of one of the studio’s upcoming films: The Eternals. The Rider’s Chloe Zhao is directing the film, which will star Angelina Jolie (Thena), Richard Madden (Icarus), Kumail Nanjiani (Kingo), Lauren Ridloff (Makkari), Brian Tyree Henry (Phastos), Salma Hayek (Ajak), Lia McHugh (Sprite), and Don Lee (Gilgamesh).
“It’s about this group of incredible immortals but through their journey we really get to explore what it means to be human and humanity on our time on this planet,” Zhao said.
“The Eternals are a race of immortal aliens sent to Earth by the Celestials to protect humankind from the Deviants,” added Madden. Ridloff also signed that she is playing the first deaf character in the MCU.
Hayek, speaking about being the leader of the group, told the crowd, “I take my inspiration from our leader, Chloe, who’s also a strong woman and it takes a strong woman to do a movie like this because it’s so big and amazing and I’m so excited to be a part of it. The way she approaches leadership as a woman, as a strong woman, is that she sees them as a family. So there’s a lot of mother instincts in this Eternal, who is not supposed to have kids. So this is very exciting, and I feel very honored to be a part of a movie that is going to allow people who never felt represented in superheroes, or in this case Eternals, represented because I am proud to have a diverse family.”
Said Jolie, “I’m so excited to be here. I’m going to work 10 times harder because I think what it means to be a part of the MCU, what it means to be an Eternal, to be a part of this family, I know what we all need to do. We have all read the script. We have all know what the task ahead is and we are all going to be working very very hard. I’m training. I am thrilled. Thank you so much.”
The film, which is shooting in London, is set for release on Nov. 6, 2020.
The Eternals are some of Marvel Comics’ most powerful and mysterious figures. They’re the brainchild of Marvel legend Jack Kirby, who left the publisher in the ’70s to move to DC Comics before returning a few years later. Upon his return to Marvel, Kirby created The Eternals, which followed a group of genetically-engineered gorgeous super-humans blessed with long life. As Kirby wrote it, the Eternals were created by the Celestials, a group of all-powerful giant space gods who designed the Eternals to help defend humanity. (Remember Kurt Russell’s all-powerful Ego from Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2? He’s a Celestial.)
Unfortunately, the Celestials also created an evil race known as the Deviants, and the Eternals and the Deviants have clashed ever since.
Up until now, the MCU has largely taken place in the 20th and 21st centuries, but Feige has previously said since The Eternals focuses on a group of ancient, everlasting beings, the film will span eons in their lives.

PTSD “is something that people live with everyday,” the actor said. “It can be a really trickling level of anxiety you constantly live with, or paranoia, or panic attacks.”
THE HOLLYWOOD REPORTER – Golden Globe-winning star of Bodyguard, Richard Madden, told The Hollywood Reporter’s Drama Actor Roundtable he found himself “physically and mentally exhausted” at the end of filming the BBC series. “I need to stop. I need to stop doing this for a while,” Madden thought, after playing a veteran suffering from Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD).
“It weighed very heavy on me,” the actor told the roundtable. “You spend more time in someone else’s clothes, saying someone else’s words, thinking someone else’s thoughts. You do lose a bit of yourself.”
“I’m not a method actor in any way, but you get a huge hangover from this,” he continued. “At the end of this, I felt very isolated and broken, much like the character was.”
To prepare for the role, Madden “spoke to a few soldiers,” but confessed it was “tough, because they really don’t want to talk about it. People don’t want to discuss this at all.”
PTSD “is something that people live with everyday,” said the Scottish actor and former Game of Thrones star. “It can be a really trickling level of anxiety you constantly live with, or paranoia, or panic attacks.” Madden said his goal as an actor was “to humanize [PTSD] within someone who is in complete denial about it.”
Madden joined Hugh Grant, Diego Luna, Sam Rockwell, Stephan James and Billy Porter for the Drama Actor Roundtable. The full roundtable is set to air July 14 on SundanceTV. Follow all the Emmy season roundtables at THR.com/Roundtables.

VOGUE – Halfway through our interview, Richard Madden discloses that he didn’t have sex until he was 18. “Eighteen!” he exclaims, as if that’s ancient. “I was the fat boy: 38in waist. I’m a 31 to 32in now, so add another seven inches…” he draws my attention to his crunched midriff. At school he was shy, and taunted in the playground. At one point he even thought, “If I get beaten up it will end” – and so scheduled a lunchtime fight with his tormentors. “And then my mum drove by and saved me. I love my mum for that.”
This “big potato”, as he describes himself, is hard to square with the 32-year-old man sitting with me now, ripped and vacuum-sealed into a navy polo shirt and jeans; blue eyes, thick brows, jaw as sharp as a bowler’s elbow. On screen he’s brooding, melancholic: everything you’d expect from a west coast, working-class Scot from Elderslie, the birthplace of William Wallace (also known as Braveheart). But his accent doesn’t have the volatile edge of fellow actor David Tennant’s, raised up the road in Ralston, nor the casual rolling confidence of Gerard Butler’s, from nearby Paisley. It’s like a lawnmower on moss – a sweet flat purr.
And he’s still boyish enough to giggle at the enormous pink bed headboard in the Soho hotel room where we meet, and to bounce briefly on the sofa and find it too soft – Goldilocks style. He settles instead in a stiff velour tub chair opposite my own, flipping one leg over the low-slung arm. Is he comfortable being the hottest man in film right now? He says he’s “flattered”, but I sense deep down he’s baffled that his taut buttocks drew record audiences to Bodyguard, the BBC thriller for which he won Best Actor in the 2019 Golden Globes. His torso spawned a thousand memes after Game of Thrones and he’s been cast as every romantic cliché – smouldering in a smock in Medici: Masters of Florence, simmering with a scythe as Lady Chatterley’s Lover. He’s played Romeo twice (“I love that character, although I am happy to leave him alone for a while”), even Prince Charming in Kenneth Branagh’s Cinderella.
The Banff World Media Festival on Monday unveiled the international winners of its Rockie Awards, which continued a traditional shootout between American and British TV producers in the Canadian Rockies.
BBC’s Bodyguard thriller was tapped as best drama, while HBO’s Barry took home the best comedy crown and BBC’s Doctor Who won for best sci-fi and genre-based series.
Elsewhere, HBO’s Sharp Objects won the prize for best limited series, while VH1’s RuPaul’s Drag Race won for best reality series. Also on the comedy front, IFC Films and CBC’s Baroness von Sketch Show collected the Rockie for best comedy and variety program.
The Rockie Awards, for which U.S. TV shows compete against international fare, also gave Baroness von Sketch Show the Rogers Prize for Excellence in Canadian Content.
In all, U.S. producers picked up nine Rockie Awards, followed by U.K. producers with eight and Canadian producers with seven.
The Banff World Media Festival will continue through Wednesday.

THE JACKAL – This is not how it should be. Richard Madden, gingerbread-haired and always smouldering, is sitting in the basement of a working men’s club in south-east London, relishing the fact he has absolutely nothing to do. Not now, at least. Tomorrow, the Glaswegian actor is presenting a BAFTA award with his Rocketman co-stars Taron Egerton and Jamie Bell, but he’s so relaxed about it he doesn’t even know the category yet (Special Visual Effects), or the nominees (it goes to Black Panther). The most pressing thing he needs to do today, ahead of an upcoming trip back to the US, is go to his house and locate his razor.
This is not how it should be. Not for the man who played Robb Stark, Game of Thrones’ tragic demi-protagonist whose death at the Red Wedding in 2013 became the TV event of the decade/century/millennium. Once his father, Ned Stark (Sean Bean), lost his head early on in the show’s run, everyone thought Robb Stark would be the new leading man. Maybe it was his hair, tousled and luscious; maybe it was his princely jawline, or his unwavering moral compass. He looked good riding a horse, was that it? This is what a leading man consists of, everyone said. Then he was murdered.
This is not how it should be. Not for the man who played David Budd, central figure in Jed Mercurio’s Bodyguard, the six-part series that brought the country together in an age where we’ve never had more things to watch on TV. It was the biggest Sunday-night drama since Downton Abbey; when a British tabloid ran a spoiler on the front page, the country was up in arms. The show’s distribution in the US on Netflix boosted its profile even further – and Madden
won a Golden Globe. Someone, somewhere whispered Bond and suddenly everyone frothed at the mouth because, of course! To put it another way, it takes him so long to leave the working men’s club, with the pictures, and the adoration, and the swarm of well-wishing locals, that the Bodyguard star may soon need a bodyguard.
‘I had to learn to get over waiting for it to all go to shit.’

Richard Madden knows this now, though he didn’t in January, when the Scottish actor found himself seated next to Moore at the Golden Globes. Madden had received his first Globe nomination for playing a British politician’s PTSD-stricken protection officer in the hit mini-series “Bodyguard,” and before the names in his category were read, Moore leaned over to strategize.
“She was like, ‘O.K., sweetie, if you win, do you want to come out behind me or do you want to go around the other way?’” Madden recalled. He responded incredulously: Of course he wouldn’t win.
But he did. And as the orchestra began to play, Madden had no idea where to go. With a professional’s ease, Moore stood up, stepped back and coaxed Madden past her to the stage. “And then when I came back to the table after,” he said, “she was like, “I asked you which way you wanted to go!’”
When it comes to navigating his path through Hollywood, the 32-year-old Madden prefers to figure it out on the fly. This week, you can catch him in the musical “Rocketman,” where Madden plays a cunning music manager whose seduction of Elton John extends past the boardroom and into the bedroom. It’s a far cry from Madden’s best-known role as Robb Stark, the virtuous, doomed “Game of Thrones” character who perished during the show’s notorious “Red Wedding” episode.
That series only got bigger and bigger as it went on, but after his third-season exit, Madden was no longer around to partake in the spoils. Still, being killed off early has its benefits: It let Madden gradually age out of callow-prince roles and start playing complicated adult men. His role on “Bodyguard” last fall served as a reintroduction of sorts, a signal to the industry that Madden’s matinee-idol looks had grown gratifyingly flinty. Even his vulnerability now seemed dangerous.
“I’m so used to playing the good guy that bad things happen to,” Madden told me in a Cannes hotel room this month, just days after “Rocketman” premiered at the film festival there. Initially tired from a day of doing press, Madden became warmer and more animated as he spoke, his blue eyes widening often for emphasis. “I was interested in playing a slightly darker character, with different motivations to him.”
His “Rocketman” role, John Reid, lets Madden play the Machiavellian type with a jolt of sexual electricity: When Reid tells the young, untested Elton John, “You’re so humble, it’s embarrassing,” Madden makes his taunt sound like a come-on.
I’m sorry for the lack of updates. I took a short break from fansites and it ended up being a long hiatus. I’ll be updating the photoshoots tomorrow but here are the events that Richard has been to this year. It’s been a very busy year for him so far!

TIME – Richard Madden has a rigor and a discipline in his work that makes him a very tough self-critic. In fact, he’s much tougher on himself than anyone else is. In him, this is an asset.
In Cinderella, he created a Prince of fine soul and sensibility. He found an English accent that he used offscreen and on for the entire duration of the shoot. It was a world away from his own Scottish brogue and Celtic being. He wanted no part of that in this spiritual aristocrat. But one thing I observed that Richard and the Prince did share was the heart of a gentleman.
Richard can certainly unleash wildness and ruthlessness when the role requires a charisma of danger. He was an electrifying Romeo when I directed him onstage in Romeo & Juliet. But he is also innately courtly and courteous, and mindful of others. This is a distinct part of his intense sex appeal, which combines those bedroom eyes with a romantic sensitivity. In Bodyguard, Richard’s intelligence and physicality worked at perfect pitch alongside his rigorous self-discipline. It paid off to frightening and moving effect.
I have no doubt that Richard will continue to shine, as a most dangerous gentleman of the silver screen.

GUARDIAN – For some lucky actors, there are moments when their career suddenly shifts into a higher gear. The right part comes along, the world notices, and boom! their whole life is different. This happened to Richard Madden with Bodyguard, in August last year. He played the tight-mouthed, tight-muscled David Budd, personal minder to Keeley Hawes’ home secretary, Julia Montague, in Jed Mercurio’s six-part BBC One thriller, and the country went bananas.
Bodyguard was great TV – gripping, unpredictable, sexy, with a madly OTT finale – but nobody could have predicted the furore it would cause. It was a national event, achieving the BBC’s largest drama audience for a decade. Social media was aflame every Sunday, with much of the heat centred on Madden, his good looks and his stoic “Ma’ams”. There were threads devoted to his eyebrows, as well as other parts of his anatomy. By the final episode, he had been upgraded from “ex-Game Of Thrones guy” (he played Robb Stark for the first three series) to potential James Bond.
Yet all this hype and bluster happened while Madden was busy doing something else. That something was Rocketman, the Elton John biopic. Madden plays John Reid, Elton’s first manager and one-time lover, and the script required him to sing and dance, neither of which are part of his natural skill set. So while Bodyguard was on, he was getting up to jazz-hands standard, while wearing a pair of 70s Cuban heels. “I loved those heels, in the end,” he says when we meet. “A double-breasted suit and a big Cuban heel. I felt pretty sharp. They gave me a bit of a wiggle.”
Madden knew that Bodyguard was doing well only because his mum kept sending him pictures of newspapers and magazines. “Like, ‘You’re on the cover of this one, and this one, and this one,’” he says cheerfully (his natural accent is Bodyguard Scottish, not GoT English). “It was nice, but it was also, ‘Please stop sending me this because it freaks me the eff out.’”
Six months on, his schedule is choreographed down to the minute. “That sudden loss of time,” he says. “Everything runs away with you. I’ve been really busy, yet there’s still more demand. You run with it, but it’s like, OK, we’re doing press for Bodyguard in America, and now we’re doing press for awards stuff, and then there’s the actual awards, and then more and more. And everything rolls into each other, so then you haven’t been in your house for two months.”
ELLE – Richard Madden is giddy at the prospect of going dark. Hunched attractively in a leather chair at a Beverly Hills hotel, the 32-year-old Scotsman, known for playing doomed scion Robb Stark on Game of Thrones and the trauma-stricken David Budd on the BBC’s Bodyguard, is eager to shed his broken-good-guy image. “I really enjoyed being a bastard,” he says, punching his right fist in his left hand like a ball in a mitt. He’s referring to his role as John Reid, the rebrand manager and former lover of Elton John (played by Taron Egerton) in this month’s fantastical and much-anticipated Rocketman biopic. “He just loved fighting people,” Madden says. Reid also had moments of charm and generosity, the actor acknowledges, but his manipulative side was much more fun to play.
In person, the actor is a riveting combination of flinty and safe. He looks like the guy to trust in a crowd, but then his nerves seem spring-loaded, like when he catches a bottle top falling off the table like it’s a grenade. We talk about getting a beer but order sparkling water instead because it’s early in the afternoon and pouring rain and, well, that combination can make for a booze-soaked slippery slope—especially in London, where Madden’s lived for 14 years. “There, it’s dark by 3 p.m. and it’s raining and miserable and you go, ‘I just want to sit by the fire with a bottle of red wine in the pub,’ ” he says, slipping into an almost incomprehensible back-and-forth Scottish brogue: “ ‘Eh, we’re shot.’ And you’re like, ‘Well, I’ll have another one.’ ” Pause. “ ‘So, are you shot or not shot? All right, cool, I’ll have another one.’ ”
Madden will abandon his beloved London for Los Angeles next month, but he still hasn’t secured a job or a place to live. Also, he’s single, maybe. A few days ago, the British press crowed about the actress Ellie Bamber breaking up with him, but he shuts down all talk of his love life. Don’t ask him about rumors that he’s the next Bond, either. “It’s all just noise,” says the actor, a pleasant aftereffect of his success in the title role in Bodyguard, the BBC’s most-watched drama since the season finales of Downton Abbey, for which he recently won a Golden Globe for Best Actor. “By March, there will be another British TV show with another young male actor, and then he’ll be the next James Bond for the following two months.”
Things might be a bit up in the air, but Madden is loving it. “I feel quite free at the moment,” he says, like any man worth his scruffy beard. “If I’m going to be reading scripts for two months, I’d rather sit by the pool than sit in a pub in East London.” Plus, he’s got some great friends in L.A., like Elton John, who whisked him off to his concert in Sacramento last night, and fellow Iron Throne heir Sophie Turner, whom he’s going to try to meet up with tonight. “It’s quite nice because we were so close when we were kids, and then we went off and did other things but reconnected as adults,” he says of Turner and other GoT costars like Kit Harington, Gwendoline Christie, and Maisie Williams. While some of his pals are still going strong on the show, he has a no-spoilers policy: “I have to be like, ‘Just let me watch it.’ ” He does, however, have a Season 8 prediction with regard to Turner’s character, Sansa Stark. “People thought she was weak and wilty,” he says, “but she’s our mother’s daughter, you know….” Since getting offed in the infamous Red Wedding scene, Madden has enjoyed watching as a fan. “It’s weird because they talk about Robb Stark, and I don’t associate myself with it anymore,” he says. “But then I remember, ‘Oh, that’s me, I played that part.’ ”
In preparation for Rocketman, Madden spoke with a number of Elton John’s and Reid’s friends. Donatella Versace, in particular, helped Madden get a better grasp of his character’s righteous zeal. “She said, ‘The thing about John Reid was that he was never wrong.’ ” And even as the relationship deteriorated (Elton John cut ties with Reid’s management company in 1998 and later settled financial disputes out of court; Reid has since retired from music management and lives in Australia), the two men shared an intimate bond. Madden and Egerton re-create that dynamic—sometimes clad in ’70s-style double-breasted suits and stacked Cuban heels, other times naked. When asked about Rocketman’s much-hyped sex scenes, Madden shakes his head and says, “I dread doing these things.” But, to him, the differences between male and female costars are negligible. “With one you get stubble rash, right?” he says. “That’s basically it. Otherwise, there’s no difference. It’s storytelling.”
Clearly, he’s a good guy at heart, though his whole body rejects the idea that he’s anything like his most famous characters. “It’s incredible to think about me in one of them,” he says with a shiver. “I don’t like it one bit!” But whether he wants to be or not, he’s bound to the code. “I suppose there’s a thing with a lot of these characters I play—to do the right thing, to look after people,” Madden says, taking a swig of sparkling water. “I suppose that is something.”
NY TIMES – After three seasons as Robb Stark in “Game of Thrones,” Richard Madden thought he knew a thing or two about television blockbusters. Then the British thriller “Bodyguard” came along and blew his mind.
Written by Jed Mercurio (“Line of Duty”), “Bodyguard” stars Madden as David Budd, a PTSD-afflicted Afghanistan war veteran assigned to protect the home secretary, Julia Montague (Keeley Hawes), whose hawkish politics he loathes — and icy allure he can’t resist.
When it debuted in late August, the numbers were staggering: According to the BBC, 41 million (and counting) watched the six-episode set, making “Bodyguard” the highest-rated drama since “Downton Abbey.” Then in October, “Bodyguard” moved to Netflix and was widely binged, leading to Golden Globe nominations for both Madden and the series, in the best television drama category.
“People asked me, ‘Did you know it was going to do so well?’ And no, I didn’t have a clue because it was about surviving quite a grueling shoot,” Madden said. “And to think this little British TV show that we all worked really hard on had such an impact is a bit overwhelming for me. I think one in four people in Britain watched it, which is crazy.”
It also solidified Madden, a 32-year-old Scotsman, as leading-man material and cast him as a front-runner to replace Daniel Craig as the next James Bond. Make what you will of reports that he favors a vodka martini. But if Madden knows anything, he’s not saying.
In a phone interview from Los Angeles as he prepared for awards season, he talked about the alchemy of “Bodyguard” and keeping his cool under the paparazzi’s glare. Here are edited excerpts from the conversation.
Those ratings! What was the magic formula?
I wish I knew because I could recreate it on every job I did. [Laughs] It’s something to do with this gray zone that we all live in, this moral ambiguity. Things can sometimes be so clean-cut in who’s the bad guy and who’s the good guy. And this straddled the lines of both, and played with the audience’s perception.
Then there’s Budd’s steamy relationship with his powerful boss. I understand that’s not such a far-fetched story line.
Actually, we worked closely with a lot of men who had been in that position — looking after foreign dignitaries and members of Parliament and royalty — and said, without naming names, that these bonds do get made and the lines do get very crossed. Because this person that you live with all the time, you see them a lot more than you do your own family, and you go through extreme situations. And thus, that kind of intimacy does happen.
What was so grueling about the shoot?
It was six-day weeks, and we were filming 14 hours a day, and the camera was always on my character. And I had this bulletproof vest on the whole time, and that’s physically uncomfortable. But it was more down to the mentality of someone who’s struggling very much with mental health issues while trying to keep his life together.

BRITISH GQ – What makes a good James Bond? British? Of course. Scottish? Even better. Can he play brutish but vulnerable? It worked for the last one. Does he look sharp in a tux? See above. But what about a wry, natural humour? Because we haven’t seen that for a while. And yet far from the troubled action man he built for Bodyguard – and even further from the princes and pretty boys that was almost his typecast – it’s his knowing wit and bone-dry quips that explain why Richard Madden is odds-on to make Double-O status. Oh, and guess what? He even drinks Vodka Martinis
Our January/ February cover star, Richard Madden is the man of the moment. From Game of Thrones, through to hit BBC drama Bodyguard and of course, those James Bond rumours. Read an exclusive extract from the interview and download to read the full interview now on digital edition.
Richard Madden lets out a groan when he clocks the question that’s coming.
So, I begin, the Mail On Sunday reported last week that you’re set to be offered…
And that’s when I hear it: the pained expression of the young British actor being forced to talk about speculation that they might be the next James Bond – a sort of hazing initiation for those who’ve done the Donmar.
“My first reaction,” says Madden, “is always the same reaction, which is the papers make up a story on a Sunday so they can discredit that story on the Monday so they can sell papers on both days.”
Sure, I say, but at the same time, the bookies aren’t making Jonah Hill the current favourite to be Britain’s favourite super spy, are they?
“They aren’t, no, but this is what happens with all these shows, like Tom Hiddleston in The Night Manager. Then there’s the next one. I’m the next one. Everyone just loves the rumour mill on that topic. I’m just the current one. There’ll be a different one next week.”
All of which is pretty hard to argue with. But still, I say, nice to be mentioned all the same.
“Lovely. I’m more than flattered to be mentioned, for people to consider putting me in that role. I’m very flattered and thankful. It’s a really brilliant thing to be in.”
Just for the record, then, you wouldn’t rule it out?
“I don’t want to curse anything by saying anything. I think that’s the curse of that. If you talk about it, you’ll curse it.”
He will admit, however, that he is a big Bond fan.
“Yeah. I love the movies. I’ve read all the books.”
You’ve read all the books?
Netflix star tells TheWrap he’d like to see a much more relaxed David Budd if story continues

And we get a fun video AND a new photoshoot!
VARIETY – SPOILER ALERT: Do not read if you have not yet watched “The Bodyguard,” streaming now on Netflix.
In his new BBC thriller “The Bodyguard,” Richard Madden plays a special protection officer tasked with keeping Britain’s Home Secretary safe. But his role isn’t relegated to a stereotypical stoic action hero. His background as an army veteran provides layers of emotion that Madden reveals in different doses.
“Trying to get the physicality right of someone who’s a professional bodyguard and has been in the army for many years…is a completely different challenge,” Madden tells Variety. “And then I suppose in lots of ways it was a great relief playing the more emotional scenes because this character spends so much time covering his emotions or holding them in.”
Here, Madden talks with Variety about playing with ambiguity for his character, the challenged of shooting a suicide scene and how response to his new show compares to “Game of Thrones.”
You can watch the whole episode here: CBS.com
I have finally found this movie and have added it to the gallery. This is a 2010 movie about Boy George, including his relationship with, musician Kirk Brandon(Richard’s character). Enjoy!
Ah Stark reunions are always the best! This looks like it was a star filled night as Richard came out to support his former co-star, Maisie Williams in her first play.
In the BBC’s Bodyguard, created and written by Jed Mercurio — perhaps best known for tense, crime procedural drama Line of Duty — Game of Thrones alum Madden stars as police officer and PTSD-suffering war veteran David Budd, who is assigned as a protection officer to the U.K.’s controversial Home Secretary Julia Montague (played by Line Of Duty’s Keeley Hawes). While a divided government deals with a heightened terrorist threat in the country, Budd has his own demons to work through — and Montague doesn’t make his job any easier.
As the Home Secretary aims to introduce a new bill that outlines increased state surveillance, Budd grapples to protect her from those opposed to such legislation as well as the greater threat of domestic terrorism that pervades London and the rest of the country. Throw into the mix his own traumatic past and a young family to look after, and PPO (personal protection officer) Budd is in for a ride that makes the horror of Robb Stark’s Red Wedding look, well, still horrific, but also like another day at the office for the protection officer.
Originally broadcast in the U.K. in late August on the BBC, the show’s electric pace and edge-of-your-seat suspense kept audiences talking incessantly about the drama (and blowing up text threads on Sunday nights!), before tuning in with bated breath weekly, only to be thrown for another loop by the multitude of careening twists and turns, and perpetually unsure who to trust.
Ahead of the show’s Netflix debut, EW caught up with Madden — who also stars in next summer’s Elton John fantasy Rocketman — to learn more about his mercurial character, that (potentially!) explosive opening sequence, and whether David Budd would’ve been any good at protecting the doomed Stark family members.
DEADLINE – After finding huge success in the United Kingdom, Bodyguard will make its way stateside on October 24 when it debuts on Netflix. The new trailer for the political thriller dropped today and features a wild amount of tensions rising between Game Of Thrones alum Richard Madden and Line Of Duty‘s Keeley Hawes.
Set in and around the corridors of power, Bodyguard tells the story of David Budd (Madden), a heroic, but volatile war veteran now working as a Specialist Protection Officer for the Royalty and Specialist Branch (RasP) of London’s Metropolitan Police Service. When he is assigned to protect the ambitious and powerful Home Secretary Julia Montague (Hawes), Budd finds himself torn between his duty and his beliefs. Responsible for her safety, could he become her biggest threat?
The series also stars Gina McKee (Line of Duty), Sophie Rundle (Peaky Blinders), Vincent Franklin (Happy Valley), Pippa Haywood (Scott & Bailey), Stuart Bowman (Versailles) and Paul Ready (The Terror).
Bodyguard is produced by World Productions, an ITV Studios company. The series is executive produced by Jed Mercurio (Line of Duty, Bodies), Simon Heath (Line of Duty, Save Me, The Great Train Robbery) for World Productions and Elizabeth Kilgarriff for BBC directed by Thomas Vincent and John Strickland, and produced by Eric Coulter and Priscilla Parish.
VARIETY – The BBC drama “Bodyguard” bowed out on a high Sunday with 11 million viewers at its peak on BBC One, for a whopping 47.9% audience share. The six-part series, which Netflix is about to launch globally, is Britain’s most popular drama since “Downton Abbey.”
Starring Richard Madden (“Game of Thrones”) and Keeley Hawes (“The Durrells”), “Bodyguard” went out the gate strongly in the U.K., where it was the biggest launch for a scripted series in more than a decade.
Aside from soccer, the ratings for Sunday night’s finale make it the most-watched program of 2018 in Britain. It was the biggest drama across all channels since an episode of “Downton Abbey” on ITV in November 2011. For the BBC, it was the biggest drama since its Christmas Day episode of “Doctor Who” in 2008.
Madden plays David Budd, a war veteran-turned-cop and special protection officer who is assigned to guard Home Secretary Julia Montague (Hawes), who is targeted by mysterious assassins. Sunday’s denouement was hugely anticipated in the U.K., with the series achieving the rare feat of running weekly and becoming genuine water-cooler TV. The BBC launched the first three episodes on its iPlayer service when the series opener went out via regular broadcast, but the show ran in weekly installments thereafter.
The first episode has become the most-requested ever on iPlayer and the closer helped drive the streaming and catchup service’s biggest ever day, with 12.3 million program requests.
The final part ran to an extended 75 minutes. Series creator Jed Mercurio, whose crime series “Line of Duty” was also a hit, told BBC radio Friday that conversations with the pubcaster about a second season are just beginning. “We know that people out there are loving Series 1 and that there would be an appetite for Series 2, but we’ll just have to wait and see,” he said.
Speaking Monday about the colossal ratings, he said he was “completely stunned by the exceptional response to ‘Bodyguard.’” Simon Heath, CEO of World Productions added: “At a time when we’re told that linear TV is dying, it’s been thrilling to see the number of viewers flocking to watch ‘Bodyguard’ live.”
Netflix will drop all six episodes globally outside the U.K., including in the U.S., on Oct. 24
BBC – Hit BBC drama Bodyguard kept an average 10.4 million viewers on tenterhooks as the series drew to a close on Sunday.
The audience reached its peak – 11 million – in its final five minutes.
The overnight ratings make the show – the brainchild of Line of Duty creator Jed Mercurio – the most watched drama of the year so far.
In fact, it is the biggest overnight drama figure since 10.5 million saw Downton Abbey’s series two finale in November 2011.
DEADLINE – Breakout new BBC One drama Bodyguard is headed to Netflix. The streaming network will carry the terror thriller starring Game of Thrones’ Richard Madden and Line of Duty’s Keeley Hawes outside of the UK and Ireland (and China where Netflix is not available). The series’ Netflix premiere is set for October 24.
The deal for Bodyguard, produced by World Productions, an ITV Studios company, was made through Netflix’s co-licensing team. The digital platform has been a partner since the show’s early production stages.
Under its co-licensing model, Netflix is collaborating with U.S. studios and international production companies on series that air on other linear or digital networks. Netflix takes first-run global distribution in as many territories as available, coming in as a partner on projects that are going to series at a finished script or pilot stage and as early as script development.
The template was previously applied to Carnival Films’ BBC Two epic period drama The Last Kingdom.
Created, written and executive produced by Jed Mercurio, Bodyguard premiered on BBC One a couple of weeks ago to 10.4 million consolidated viewers, with a 40.9% share on BBC One. This is the highest launch figure for any new drama across all UK channels in a decade. Its most recent episode, the fifth ep, which aired on Sunday evening, averaged an overnight rating of 8M viewers and a 38.2% share. This was an increase of over 1M on last week’s average overnight figure and the highest overnight rating of the series so far.
Set in and around the corridors of power, Bodyguard tells the fictional story of David Budd (Madden), a heroic but volatile war veteran now working as a Specialist Protection Officer for the Royalty and Specialist Branch (RasP) of London’s Metropolitan Police Service. When he is assigned to protect the ambitious and powerful Home Secretary Julia Montague (Hawes), Budd finds himself torn between his duty and his beliefs. Responsible for her safety, could he become her biggest threat?
Gina McKee, Sophie Rundle, Vincent Franklin, Pippa Haywood, Stuart Bowman and Paul Ready co-star. Executive producing the series are Jed Mercurio, Simon Heath for World Productions and Elizabeth Kilgarriff for BBC.
Bodyguard extends Netflix’s partnerships with UK production companies and broadcasters which includes the following series, done through different models, including co-production: The Great British Baking Show (Channel 4), The End of the F*cking World (Channel 4), Black Earth Rising (BBC Two), Collateral (BBC Two), Troy: Fall of a City (BBC One), Wanderlust (BBC One) and Giri/Haji (BBC One).
Maria Kyriacou, President, International, ITV Studios said: “Bodyguard has gripped the [UK] with its twists and turns. It’s a perfect example of a show produced locally which has huge global appeal. Through our partnership with Netflix, we can’t wait for audiences around the world to enjoy the show as much as audiences here in the UK.”
The BBC’s new Sunday-night TV drama has made Richard Madden the hottest actor on British TV. In more ways than one. Not that he sees it that way
SATURDAY TIMES – How much time are you spending thinking about Bodyguard? A lot, I bet. The new BBC thriller, about the relationship between an ambitious and unknowable home secretary and her PTSD-addled protection officer, was written by Jed Mercurio of Line of Duty fame, and was cynically and artfully designed to hook, obsess and fixate an audience into appointment viewing.
Bodyguard is made to steal us away from all newly acquired suit-yourself, binge-watch and content-stream habits, with charismatic heroes who might actually be despicable antiheroes and a succession of frenzied plot twists that simply must be consumed on the night lest someone catch you out with a spoiler on social media. Even if that doesn’t happen, even if your viewing isn’t partly ruined by a stray Facebook comment, watch an episode even a little late and find yourself locked out of all the best conversations, the most detailed post mortems, most frenetic speculations. Bodyguard is, in essence, a middle-aged Love Island, a reason to gather excitedly round the screen at the prescribed hour in a way that hasn’t really happened since the late Nineties.
Bloody hell, it’s good, I tell its star Richard Madden. The 32-year-old Glaswegian actor made his name as Robb Stark in Game of Thrones and consolidated it as Prince Charming in 2015’s Kenneth Branagh-directed Cinderella. Now, after playing Mellors in Mercurio’s 2015 Lady Chatterley’s Lover for the BBC, he trembles on the verge of Poldarking himself into borderline indecent, heavily fetishised glory as Bodyguard’s David Budd, the protection officer at the heart of the story.
“Oh, right,” he says. His accent is broad, non-posh Scottish; unexpected to those who remember it as generically Yorkshire in Game of Thrones. His eyes are intense. He’s arch and funny; he’d probably qualify as dangerously charming if there weren’t also something watchful and cautious about him. “Thanks very much! I enjoyed playing something a bit more adult, less boyish. I’m keen to play more grown-up roles, without actually growing up myself. Pretending to be adult. I’m done playing princes. Princes and royalty and lords. Also, it’s nice not to do an accent.” David Budd is – conveniently – Scottish. “One less thing to think about. Shall we get a drink? It is a Tuesday night, after all.”
It’s a Monday, I point out, but all the same we order a beer and wine from the front desk of the photographic studio in which we sit.
This is not the first time Madden and I have met. Three years ago, he bowled up to me at a friend’s party and demanded to know why I hadn’t featured him in Grazia magazine’s Chart of Lust recently. A placing in the list (which I compile weekly, and does exactly as its title suggests – rates the most fanciable people of that moment’s news), is deeply coveted among those who present themselves as above that kind of vanity, but definitely aren’t. Newscasters, Hollywood A-listers, national treasures, disruptive artists (Grayson Perry once told me he’d pinned his mention up on the wall in his studio), award-winning novelists … I’ve been lobbied by spads chasing mentions for their political charges on more than one occasion. But this was the first time a candidate had ever approached me in the flesh. I was both impressed and amused by his front.
The Scottish actor on objectification, roles in the “grey zones” and how he escapes the attention of being a star
MR PORTER – It has been a dizzying week for Mr Richard Madden as the reaction to his latest television series, Bodyguard, has intensified. The BBC’s delirious new primetime thriller – which stars Mr Madden in the title role — has generally been a ratings and critical hit. However, this being 2018, it wouldn’t do to not have a furore, and Bodyguard’s so far seems to revolve around the number of women shown in positions of power. In short: there’s too many, apparently, at least, according to many Twitterati – who felt this was an example of the BBC being unrealistically politically correct. (This despite the fact that until April 2018, the United Kingdom had a female prime minister, home secretary and Metropolitan Police commissioner.) Mr Madden, who is drily Scottish at the best of times, has no truck with misogynist trolls.
“I just thought: this is so fucking bananas!”, the 32-year-old exclaims over a light lunch. The usual healthy foods are complemented by a Diet Coke, a packet of cigarettes and a liberal use of the F-word that verges on the Rab C Nesbitt. “It’s not unrealistic at all to have these women in there – it’s completely normal.” It should be like that, he says. “Especially when the show focuses on a young white male. Let’s not forget that the camera is on a young white male the whole time.”
Handsome, affable and enjoyably cheeky, Mr Madden has thus far shuttled between two types of role: the romantic hero and the action ingénue. Sometimes he has done both at the same time – most famously playing Robb Stark in Game Of Thrones. He has played Prince Kit in Cinderella, and he has been Romeo on-stage, not once but twice. He has also bounced about and wielded a gun in Bastille Day, opposite Mr Idris Elba. Bodyguard has guns, but it’s the chance to expand his range that made him jump at the role. In the six-part series he plays David Budd, a bodyguard whose time as a soldier at war has left him suffering with PTSD. When Budd is assigned to protect a hostile, hawkish home secretary (Ms Keeley Hawes), we soon realise he may not actually want to protect her. Apart from those times when he’s in bed with her, of course.
DIGITAL SPY – With Richard Madden’s volatile veteran David Budd eyeing every other character in BBC One’s Bodyguard with suspicion, it’s can be tricky to work out who’s actually up to no good.
But we’ve got some theories after a stunning second episode that saw Keeley Hawes’ formidable Home Secretary, Julia Montague, become the target of an assasination attempt, and later end up in bed with Budd.
Here’s what’s going to be keeping us up nights after the latest installment.
1. Who is behind the terror attacks?
With London under siege, the UK’s threat level soars across Bodyguard’s latest episode.
The investigation continues into the aborted October 1 bombing that Budd helped prevent, and while the culprit Nadia – apparently coerced by her husband – is “too intimidated to reveal much”, it’s suspected that the couple’s “accomplices… may still be at large”.
What’s more, the bomb used in the attack on Budd’s children’s school includes the same “sophisticated mechanisms” seen in Nadia’s device, suggesting that both operations were carried out by the same terror cell.
This is all part of something bigger.
2. Who is the leak?
The attack on the school was apparently a revenge plot, with the terror cell seeking retribution on Budd for thwarting their previous bombing.
How did the terrorists identify Budd as the officer in question? Honest(?) copper Anna Sampson (Gina McKee) argues that a witness at the scene of the train bombing, or an accomplice of Nadia’s, could have fingered Budd.
MI5, though suspects an “internal leak” within the police, and later – during the attempt on Julia’s life – the boys in blue are apparently given orders by “an executive officer at SO15” that prevent them from intervening.
Is there a police conspiracy out to get Budd? Was the intention of limiting police protection to have him and Julia knocked off in one fell swoop?
Or… could Julia have given the order herself? (More on our suspicions that the Home Secretary is actually a supervillain below.)
DEADLINE – British TV terror thriller Bodyguard became the biggest new drama launch in the UK this year with a peak of 6.9M viewers and a 35% share watching its Sunday night debut.
The six-part BBC One drama, which stars Game Of Thrones alum Richard Madden and Line Of Duty‘s Keeley Hawes, launched with 6.7M overnight viewers across the 9pm hour.
The ratings may help distributor ITV Studios Global Entertainment secure a U.S. deal for the show, created by Line of Duty’s Jed Mercurio.
The drama, which is produced by ITV-owned Line of Duty producer World Productions, is set in and around the corridors of power, Bodyguard tells the story of a heroic but volatile war veteran assigned to protect the Home Secretary whose politics run contrary to his own.
Madden plays David Budd who is now working as a Specialist Protection Officer for the Royalty and Specialist Protection Branch of London’s Metropolitan Police Service. When he is assigned to protect the ambitious and powerful Home Secretary, Julia Montague (Hawes), whose politics stand for everything he despises, Budd finds himself torn between his duty and his beliefs. Responsible for her safety, is he actually her biggest threat?
Line Of Duty creator Jed Mercurio wrote and is exec producing the project with Simon Heath for World Productions and Elizabeth Kilgarriff for BBC One. Thomas Vincent and John Strickland are directing. Further cast include Gina McKee (Line Of Duty) Sophie Rundle (Peaky Blinders), Vincent Franklin (Happy Valley), Pippa Haywood (Scott & Bailey), Stuart Bowman (Versailles) and Paul Ready (The Terror).
The Game of Thrones actor plays a Personal Protection Officer in Jed Mercurio’s tense new BBC drama
RADIOTIMES – Richard Madden plays the Home Secretary’s Personal Protection Officer in Jed Mercurio’s new BBC drama Bodyguard – but he already knows just how impressive real bodyguards can be.
Speaking on set at a mocked-up Home Office in an empty Uxbridge office building, he recalls an exciting (but disorientating) experience in Mexico.
“I was doing press for Game of Thrones many moons ago,” he says, “and I had a bodyguard in Mexico City, about six foot five, a female bodyguard. She was just huge. And we were at an after party one night after some premiere, and a fight broke out.
“My feet didn’t touch the ground. She had me up, out, and in the back of a car, into the footwell in the back of the car after this fight. Because it was Mexico City, there were guns and everything, and I just didn’t know what had happened.
“But I was just thrown into the back of the car and the door wasn’t even closed before we were off. Which was quite exciting – but I spilled my drink!”
Having had “a few” bodyguards in his time (including one in Rio “that had been shot about four times and showed me all his gunshot wounds”), Madden was pretty clued in when he was cast as PPO David Budd.
In Bodyguard, he is a war veteran who is newly assigned to Home Secretary Julia Montague (Keeley Hawes). He must protect her from all potential dangers, constantly scanning for threats and searching her home and even deciding the route of her car.
From his own experience, he knows how weird that can be.
“It was quite a bizarre thing of just being shadowed the whole time, and knowing that someone’s got their eye on you, and doing it in a way that is completely invisible,” he explains. “And you just have no idea.”
Bodyguard begins on Sunday 26th August at 9pm on BBC1

TV WISE – After previously releasing a brief teaser, BBC One has now launched the full trailer for Line Of Duty creator Jed Mercurio’s new thriller series Bodyguard.
Set to premiere later this year, Bodyguard is set in and around the corridors of power and tells the story of David Budd (Madden), a heroic but volatile war veteran now working as a Specialist Protection Officer for the Royalty and Specialist Protection Branch (RaSP) of London’s Metropolitan Police Service. When he is assigned to protect the ambitious and powerful Home Secretary Julia Montague (Hawes), Budd finds himself torn between his duty and his beliefs. Responsible for her safety, could he become her biggest threat?
The six episode series, which was originally commissioned back in August 2016, was created and penned by Mercurio and is being produced for BBC One by Line Of Duty indie World Productions. In addition to Richard Madden and Keeley Hawes, the cast also includes: Gina McKee, Sophie Rundle, Vincent Franklin, Stuart Bowman, Nina Toussaint-White, Pippa Haywood and Stephanie Hyam. The directors are Thomas Vincent and John Strickland. The executive producers are Jed Mercurio and Simon Heath for World Productions and Elizabeth Kilgarriff for BBC One.
I was very sad that Richard wouldn’t be in future seasons but according to this article, they plan on jumping ahead 20 years to one of his descendants.
What will happen in Medici: Masters of Florence season 2?
The first season charted the rise Cosimo de’ Medici (Game Of Thrones’ Richard Madden), who became head of the Medici family after his father Giovanni (Dustin Hoffman) was murdered.
Through flashbacks, viewers learned how Giovanni schemed his way into power and pressured his sons into joining the family business.
Frank Spotnitz, the show’s co-creator, explained: “Season one is really about Cosimo’s journey.
“For a time we decided to begin with Lorenzo ‘the Magnificent’ because in many ways his life represents the pinnacle of Medici achievement: the High Renaissance, Michelangelo, Da Vinci, Botticelli.
“But ultimately [we] decided to begin Season one with Giovanni and his son Cosimo.
“Now we are going to jump forward in time about 20 years for season two to tell the story of Lorenzo ‘the Magnificent’, and we’re actually anticipating that that will take two seasons.”
“In our story we emphasise his love of art and how he used his power and influence as head of the Medici bank to foster the revolutionary art that led to the Renaissance.”
Spotnitz has revealed that season 2 will jump ahead 20 years and will focus on Lorenzo ‘the Magnificent’, Cosimo’s grandson who reigned for more than 20 years but drove the family bank to ruin.
He told Variety: “When we first tackled this, we weren’t really sure where to begin the saga of the Medici.

VARIETY – Richard Madden, best known for playing Robb Stark on “Game of Thrones,” is in negotiations to join Taron Egerton in Paramount’s Elton John biopic “Rocketman” as the music icon’s longtime manager, John Reid.
Jamie Bell is also on board to play Bernie Taupin with Dexter Fletcher attached to helm the project. Lee Hall penned the script. Paramount Pictures will finance and distribute the pic.
Reid, a legendary music manager in the ’70s and ’80s who also helped with Queen’s rise to fame in the mid-’70s, managed John from 1970 to 1998. Along the way, the two also became lovers, but their romance ended after five years following the leak of a letter from John’s accountants detailing Reid’s spending that was uncovered by the Daily Mail. The two would continue to work together professionally until 1998.
Matthew Vaughn and his Marv Films will produce, along with John and his Rocket Pictures partner David Furnish.
The role is a big win for Madden, who has been particular about the film roles he chooses since leaving “Game of Thrones” after Season 3. He did co-star in Disney’s “Cinderella” as the Prince and also appeared with Idris Elba in “The Take.” On the TV side since “Game of Thrones,” he has starred in the Netflix show “Medici: Masters of Florence” and Amazon’s “Electric Dreams.”
He is repped by WME and Troika.

TV LINE – Game of Thrones’ Richard Madden is shooting for the moon with his latest TV gig.
TVLine has learned exclusively that the actor formerly known as Robb Stark has signed on to star in Strange New Things, Amazon’s ambitious drama pilot set in outer space. Based on Michel Faber’s celebrated 2014 novel The Book Of Strange New Things, project — which is being eyed as a 10-episode event series — centers on a soulful, intense priest (Madden) who leaves his wife to travel to a distant planet/colony to preach to the native population.
Earlier this year, our sister site Deadline described the project as “a heart-wrenching love story of a husband and wife with the universe between them,” likening it to “Heart Of Darkness in space.”
Matt Charman (Bridge of Spies) will pen the pilot and serve as an executive producer, with Kevin MacDonald (The Last King of Scotland) handling directing duties. Andy Harries (Strike Back) and Lila Rawlings (Left Bank Productions) also are on board as producers.
Back on Sunday August 14, Richard attended the launch of the new Idris Elba + Superdry Boxpark retail space in London. Few photos from the event have now been added to the gallery, enjoy!
I have updated the gallery with additional HQ posters, promotional images (textless posters), and production stills of Richard in Bastille Day. Be sure to check them out! And remember to follow the site on twitter @rmaddenfan. Enjoy!

Yesterday (April 21), Richard visited The Graham Norton Show with his Cinderella and Romeo and Juliet co-star Lily James. Joan Collins, Paul Hollywood, and DNCE also appeared on the show. The interview aired tonight on BBC One. You can check out high quality photos from the talk show in the gallery and watch clips from the interview below.
THE GUARDIAN – Richard Madden can recall with clarity the moment he crossed the line with Idris Elba. The “odd couple”, as Madden describes himself and his Bastille Day co-star, were just days into the action film’s three-month shoot in Paris. The 29-year-old actor plays a pickpocket who becomes the unlikely partner-in-crime of a former CIA agent (enter Elba, giving the Bond audition of his life). They had been rehearsing for a car chase, and were preparing for the first take, when Madden decided to wind Elba up. “I turned to him and I said: ‘Are you going to do it like that on the take?’” Suddenly there was tension in the air. “I could see him thinking: ‘What the fuck’s this guy doing?’ It was great. At the end of the scene, he realised what I was doing and was like: ’You’re a fucker! You’re just trying to fuck me up!’” Madden laughs, then lets out a long breath. “He could have taken it the wrong way…”
The opening passage of Bastille Day, in which Elba’s agent chases Madden’s petty thief across Paris, sets a pace that doesn’t let up. But though the film serves up plenty of moments for Elba to showcase his action-man talents, it’s also an effective two-hander. The dynamic between the duo develops into something reminiscent of the odd action couples of old (in Lethal Weapon or 48 Hrs). When, on the verge of big shootout, Madden’s character asks Elba: “Can I have a gun?”, and gets a withering glower in return, it feels like Joe Pesci pestering Mel Gibson. Madden says that he improvised the line, and you can tell he’s proud it made the final cut.
Winding up Stringer Bell may be a bold move, but would you expect anything less from the King In The North? Madden’s turn as the ill-fated Robb Stark in Game Of Thrones ended with him being offed in the show’s most famous set-piece. Since then, his biggest roles has been playing the lusty gamekeeper in Jed Mercurio’s TV adaptation of Lady Chatterley’s Lover and the more clean-cut prince in Kenneth Branagh’s Cinderella. But this year looks set to be bigger: as well as Bastille Day, he’s landed a key part in another big-budget TV drama, starring alongside Dustin Hoffman as Cosimo, the charismatic heir to the ruthless Medici clan in Medici: Masters Of Florence.
In person, Madden is more self-deprecating than self-assured. Our interview is littered with phrases such as “I’ll keep doing the things I don’t know if I’m good enough to do” or “It will probably slap me in the face at some point”. He confesses that, during the filming of Bastille Day (the release of which was postponed due to last November’s Paris attacks), he kept up his American accent even when off-set, not for reasons of method acting, but so that his colleagues could understand him. His Scottish accent is so broad, he says, that he often plays the American to get by “because even Siri doesn’t understand me! She doesn’t get a word I say. I’m like, ‘What time’s the next train?’ And Siri’s like: ‘Calling: ex-girlfriend.’” Fake accent he may have, but his face is still recognisable to ardent GoT fans. He gets stopped in the street a lot. I suggest he dress in disguise. “I’ve done that before,” Madden nods. “The problem is, you look like someone who is trying to be in disguise and it actually [looks] worse.” He describes the effect of this second-guessing over being recognised as “fucking with your head. You think: ‘I can’t order the fucking spaghetti because there’ll be a photo of me on the internet with tomato sauce down my face,’ and the next thing, no one’s recognised you at all.”
The first rehearsal pictures for Richard and Lily James’ new play Romeo & Juliet have just been released, you can check them in our gallery! They look so great! Enjoy :)
Bastille Day will be out in the cinemas tomorrow (April 22), and thanks to Flickering Myth we have now 2 new posters of Richard’s new movie. Be sure to check them in our gallery!
ASKMEN – When Richard Madden (you might also know him as Robb Stark in Game of Thrones) comes face-to-face with Idris Elba in their new movie Bastille Day, the pair don’t exactly get on. Their mismatched characters are forced to work together to catch the baddies behind a terrorist bombing – or rather Elba’s gruff cop convinces Madden’s pickpocket to work with him. Anyway, they’re not exactly best bros.
We all know that feeling, the dread of having to work with a colleague we don’t exactly get on with. Maybe they’re bossy. Maybe they’ve turned paper-pushing passive aggression into an artform. They might just have stolen the water THAT YOU BOILED from the kettle. Arseholes.
To help us with office scenarios like this in the future, we asked Idris Elba and Richard Madden for their best advice on navigating office politics. This is how you deal with a difficult colleague …maybe don’t spit in the kettle though.
A new clip featuring Richard and Idris Elba from Bastille Day was recently released. You can watch the clip below:

The first trailer for Richard’s new movie Bastille Day is finally out! The movie will hit cinemas on April 22. You can find the trailer below:
Michael Mason (Richard Madden, Game Of Thrones) is an American pickpocket living in Paris who finds himself in the hands of the CIA when he steals a bag that contains more than just a wallet. Sean Briar (Idris Elba, Avengers: Age Of Ultron), the field agent on the case, soon realizes that Michael is just a pawn in a much bigger game and is also his best asset to uncover a large-scale criminal conspiracy in the heart of the police force.
Going against commands, Briar recruits Michael to help quickly track down the source of the corruption. As a 24hr chase ensues, the unlikely duo discover they are both targets and must rely upon each other in order to take down a common enemy.

THE TELEGRAPH.CO.UK – They are the star-crossed young lovers set to ignite the West End with their passion in Sir Kenneth Branagh’s new production of Romeo and Juliet.
And the first glimpse of Lily James and Richard Madden in character suggests it could be something of a steamy affair.
James and Madden, who also starred together in the film version of Cinderella, are to bring Romeo and Juliet to a new generation of fans with a fresh take on the centuries’-old story, under the direction of Sir Kenneth.
The production, due at the Garrick Theatre, London, from May to August next year, will also star 77-year-old Sir Derek Jacobi as Mercutio, one of the most surprising casting decisions in recent memory.
The first picture to be released of the show reveals James and Madden in an intimate clinch, suggesting the 2016 version will not shy away from the more passionate elements of the storyline.
While its modern look is a far cry from the bodices of traditional Shakespeare productions, it is understood the production will stick closely to the Bard’s original script and plot.
James, best known for her role as Lady Rose in Downton Abbey, is seen gripping her co-star’s open shirt as they get into character as Montague and Capulet.
The show is to be broadcast live in cinemas in the UK and abroad on July 7, the Kenneth Branagh Theatre Company has announced.
The company’s current production, The Winter’s Tale starring Sir Kenneth and Dame Judi Dench, will be broadcast live in more than 1,300 cinemas on November 26, after the theatre show sold out.
Speaking of Romeo and Juliet earlier this month, Sir Kenneth admitted the play has “real challenges”.
He told the Stage: “Of course I by no means felt I had cracked it 30 years ago, when it was the first Shakespeare I directed. I wanted to go back to that play again, and when you work with people you realise have the appetite and the ability to play the parts, like Lily James and Richard Madden, and those talents are ready to go to work with a play that you feel contains unfinished business, that becomes very enticing. We all spent a couple of years on Cinderella, from the casting to filming and then playing it through the distribution and press tour to promote the film. So you get to know each other, and to have those longer conversations about what you’d like to do together.” (source)
A brand new promotional poster for Kenneth Branagah’s Romeo and Juliet – featuring Richard and Lily James – has been released and you can see it in our gallery! Be sure to check it our, as it looks AMAZING!
While in Italy filming his new show Medici Masters of Florence, Richard attended the Roma Fiction Fest for an exclusive world preview of the drama. Several pics from the red carpet and panel have now been added to the gallery, but be sure to keep the site and twitter @rmaddenfan checked for more additions!
GARRICK THEATRE – Shakespeare’s classic romantic tragedy Romeo and Juliet will play at the Garrick Theatre from May 2016 as part of the Kenneth Branagh Theatre Company season. Richard Madden and Lily James will play the star-crossed lovers, alongside Derek Jacobi as the hot-tempered Mercutio. Kenneth Branagh will direct this production, which will be the fourth to appear in his much-anticipated collection of shows at the Garrick.
Romeo and Juliet will reunite James and Madden, who played Cinderella and Prince Charming in Branagh’s 2015 film Cinderella. Madden is best known for his performance as Robb Stark in Game of Thrones and his recent appearance in BBC One’s drama Lady Chatterley’s Lover. James made her name as Lady Rose in Downton Abbey and has played in a variety of stage productions. Associate director Rob Ashford and designer Christopher Oram will also be involved in this production.
A heart-breaking tale of young love, Romeo and Juliet is one of Shakespeare’s most famous works and is regularly performed across the world. It tells the tale of two families locked in a feud, the Capulets and the Montagues. Romeo is the hot-blooded son of the Montagues, and Juliet the beautiful teenage daughter of the Capulets. After meeting at a masquerade ball, the pair fall instantly in love but their forbidden coupling has devastating and fatal consequences.
It has been commented that the choice of stage and screen veteran Derek Jacobi as the young, hot-tempered Mercutio will challenge the standard view of the playing age of Shakespeare characters. In a time where gender is constantly challenged within Shakespeare productions, such as an all-female Titus Andronicus, it will be very interesting to see the effects of playing with the age of the characters.
Romeo and Juliet promises to be a wonderful piece of theatre and will run at the Garrick Theatre from May 12th 2016 to August 13th 2016. (source)
Richard will attend the Roma Fiction Fest on November 14 together with the cast of the new drama Medici: Masters of Florence (currently filming in Italy). Be sure to keep the site and twitter @rmaddenfan checked for photos and news that day!

Richard is currently in Italy filming his new series Medici: Masters of Florence. He’s gonna be in Montepulciano (Tuscany) till October 13 (I think) to film some scenes. VARIETY – Dustin Hoffman and “Game of Thrones” alum Richard Madden have been tapped to star in an eight-part drama series chronicling the rise of Italian Renaissance political dynasty, the Medici family.
“Medici: Masters of Florence,” which is produced by Matilde and Luca Bernabei’s Lux Vide, and Frank Spotnitz’s Big Light Productions, has Madden playing enterprising son Cosimo de’ Medici and Hoffman in a pivotal role as family patriarch, Giovanni de’ Medici. The story will concentrate on the family’s ascent from simple merchants to power brokers who sparked an economic and cultural revolution. Along the way, they also accrue a long list of powerful enemies.
“The Medici came to power at a time of great social and economic inequality,” said Spotnitz. “They were great disrupters. Their banking practices led to the creation of a middle class, making them unimaginably wealthy. The Medici in turn used their vast power and resources to challenge traditional thinking, ushering in a new era of revolutionary art and science such as the world had never seen. It’s a powerful story that resonates even now.”
Spotnitz (“The X-Files”) created the series with Nicholas Meyer (“Houdini”). He is exec producing with Matilde and Luca Bernabei (“Coco Chanel”). Steven Spielberg protege Sergio Mimica-Gezzan (“Under the Dome”) will direct all eight hour-long episodes. Principal photography will begin this month on location in Rome and Florence, and includes unprecedented access to Palazzo Vecchio, the Basilica di San Lorenzo, the Duomo and other sites where the actual events occurred.
“The legacy of the Medici family is so profound that their impact on the Renaissance is immeasurable. The foundations they laid in business and culture reach into the modern world today, which gives our story great breadth and depth,” said Matilde and Luca Bernabei, Lux Vide’s Chairman and CEO, respectively. “After seven centuries, their story remains a compelling one, full of intrigue, power, art and faith. The historic and artistic heritage they left us still lives on, and we hope that it will inspire a new Renaissance in Italy, Europe and throughout the world. Because of the project’s cultural importance, we wanted to bring the best talents to the series; great writer/executive producer Frank Spotnitz and the incomparable actors Dustin Hoffman and Richard Madden.”
RAI will broadcast the series in Italy. Wild Bunch’s newly announced television division is overseeing international sales, which will launch at MIPCOM in a few weeks.
“Wild Bunch is very proud to announce the launch of its TV department with their participation as co-financier and international distributor in such a tremendous project, along with all the renown partners and the amazing talents attached to it,” said Carole Baraton, in charge of Wild Bunch TV. “We are all the happier as this series is perfectly representative of what the Wild Bunch TV editorial line is to be — to deliver a very modern-noir take on the epic of the Renaissance period.” (source)
Cinderella released on Blu-ray & DVD last week. If you haven’t picked up a copy, make sure you do! Blu-ray screencaptures of Richard from the disc menu and three bonus features have been added to the gallery. Screencaptures from the movie will be added soon!
BRANAGH THEATHRE LIVE – The first season of the Kenneth Branagh Theatre Company Live promises an exceptional series of plays broadcast to cinemas from London’s Garrick Theatre over the course of a year.
RADIO TIMES – Lady Chatterley’s Lover is the story that shocked a generation, sparking decades of controversy after its initial publication in 1928.
DH Lawrence’s tale of an illicit affair crossing social boundaries is making a return to our screens this weekend, with Game of Thrones star Richard Madden as groundskeeper Mellors.
It won’t, however, be dropping any jaws this time around, says Madden.
“I don’t think it can shock. From 12-years-old you can go on the internet and find anything you want so I don’t think there’s much to shock anyone anymore,” the 29-year-old says. “Hopefully this story is just going to bring a grit to these characters that is real and actually very moving, to see people struggling through life and despite all the odds trying to find beauty and hope.”
But it does go without saying that there will be scenes of a sexual nature that some people will find shocking…
“It’s not one for my mother I don’t think!” he laughs. “There’s not much nudity per say but she said, ‘Will there be noises?’ and I said, ‘There might be’, so she said, ‘Well, I’ll not watch it then.’”
For Madden, there is more to those intimate scenes than deep breaths and bared flesh. “It’s a connecting of two souls that are in lots of ways misplaced in this world. She’s misplaced in lots of ways, being part of that society and it not being right for her, and he’s misplaced in this world where he doesn’t feel like things should be the way they are.”
And much more to the relationship between Mellors and Lady Chatterley than just lust.
“You know when you’re really in love with someone and you have that great intimate relationship? It’s not just great sex or lust, it’s a real connection,” says Madden.
RADIO TIMES – Richard Madden takes on the role of gamekeeper Oliver Mellors in BBC1’s lush adaptation of Lady Chatterley’s Lover yesterday night. The 29-year-old actor, who is best known for playing Robb Stark in hit fantasy series Game of Thrones, got into character by bedding down in a remote cottage during filming.
“I’m staying a 60-second walk from here,” he told RadioTimes.com, when we met him on set in rural Wales. “I’m not a method actor at all but I did quite like the idea of being in a cottage in the grounds of the house, which is what Mellors does. I kind of liked the isolation of that. And it’s a lovely cottage!” he added.
His rural location meant there was little socialising after the director called “cut” for the day – “I learn my lines and go to sleep!” – but the way of life suited the British star.
“I don’t like being at home when I’m shooting – I like being in different places.” (source)

THE STAGE – Actors Richard Madden and Jeremy Irvine, writer Jake Brunger and director Jessica Swale are among the figures coming together for a new festival hosted by the Old Vic.
The festival is being held in celebration of the 11th anniversary of the Old Vic New Voices initiative, and will bring established actors, writers and directors together with new talent nurtured through the scheme.
Featuring new work by British and American playwrights and a new musical, the programme will run from June 19 to July 24 on the Old Vic’s main stage.
New musical The Natives, written by Cat Jones and Matthew Booth and directed by Jamie Jackson, will take place on June 30.
Brunger’s Four Play will be directed by Jack Sain and will run on June 26, while Swale will direct Steven Hevey’s Sirius on July17.
Other performers involved in the festival include Pippa Haywood, Carly Bawden and Marc Elliot, while directors Derek Bond, Alice Hamilton and Caroline Byrne will also be involved.
The programme also include new work by Lucinda Burnett, Thomas Bradshaw and Nessah Muthy.
As part of the festival, a new play by James Baldwin, called Match Fit, will visit schools across London from June 22 to July 17.
The festival is funded by the TS Eliot Estate and Arts Council England.
ACE theatre director Neil Darlison said: “The chance to create new work that will be showcased on the Old Vic’s stage is an exciting opportunity for the participating playwrights. The Old Vic New Voices programme has supported a diverse range of young artists and innovative projects over recent years and the new festival element will help to build on the success achieved to date.”
The festival will be free to attend, with tickets available via a lottery. (source)
Richard attended the Royal Academy of Arts Summer Exhibition – VIP Preview at the Royal Academy yesterday (June 3) in London. Various photos from the event have now been added to the gallery, with big thanks to my friend Hailey from Kristin Kreuk Daily for the help!
Richard attended this’ year Costume Institute Benefit Gala (MET) dedicated to ‘China Through The Looking Glass’. He looked handsome in a Tommy Hilfiger suit. Sadly, not much photos were taken of him but, the few I was able to find have been added to the gallery. Thanks to Tori for the help!

WHATSONSTAGE – Kenneth Branagh will direct and star in a year-long season of plays at the Garrick Theatre, opening in October with The Winter’s Tale co-starring Judi Dench.
The season, which marks Branagh’s first return to the West End since his acclaimed performance in Michael Grandage’s revival of Ivanov in 2008, will also feature Harlequinade, The Painkiller (with Rob Brydon), Romeo and Juliet (starring Richard Madden and Lily James) and The Entertainer (with Branagh as Archie Rice).
Branagh told WhatsOnStage that all the productions featured in the season – tickets for which go on sale at 9am on Friday (17 April) – have been “long-standing passions”.
“I felt as though a moment was approaching whereby some of this work could come together,” he said. “Finally, Nica Burns, who I worked with many years ago at the Donmar, suggested the Garrick, where we could do both intimate and epic stuff, and it suddenly became possible.”
It’s followed by Romeo and Juliet (12 May to 13 August 2016), starring, as previously tipped, Richard Madden and Lily James, who Branagh recently directed on screen in Disney’s Cinderella, in the title roles.
Branagh, who directs, said that Madden and James are both “wildly excited” to reunite in the production and have “earned the right to do it”, considering they both have classical experience (James in Othello, Madden in the Globe’s Romeo and Juliet). He added that he hopes the production will attract “new audiences”. (source)
Added in the gallery, outtakes from the beautiful photoshoot Richard did with Lily for People Magazine. Enjoy!
Updated the gallery adding digital HQ scans from the Flaunt issue #140 featuring Richard (with big thanks to Emily!) and some more pics from the Regent Street Apple Store event. Enjoy!
GET INTO FILM – Into Film Reporter Manasi talks to Kenneth Branagh, Lily James, Richard Madden & Holliday Grainger to discuss release of Disney’s live-action Cinderella.
SUGARSCAPE – The live action Cinderella remake hit up our UK cinemas on Friday, and to celebrate we went and had a chinwag with Richard Madden who plays Prince Charming aka Kit in the movie. And as well as having glorious eyebrows, a fabby Scottish accents and actual Louboutins on, he had some well funny stuff to say about old Cinders too – ’cause it turns out he’d buy her a pair of Nike trainers if he got the chance, isn’t massively keen on the whole ‘foot fetish’ thing, and probably wouldn’t go after his own Princess IRL. Oh, and he reckons Prince Charming would be a fan of Disclosure and Years and Years, isn’t very good at chat up lines and thinks you should go and see the film because it’s magical.
If you don’t want to marry him already and chase him around the ball until he makes that bloody glass slipper fit on your foot, you should probably reassess your priorities. (source)
PA – Cinderella hunk Richard Madden has insisted the latest adaptation of Lady Chatterley’s Lover in which he stars will focus on romance, not raciness. DH Laurence’s novel was the subject of an obscenity trial in Britain after it was first published in full in 1960, because of the graphic language it uses to describe the passionate love affair between married aristocrat Lady Chatterley and her gamekeeper Oliver Mellors. Game Of Thrones star Richard as been cast opposite Holliday Grainger in a new BBC adaptation of the infamous story.
COMPANY.CO.UK – IRL Prince Charming, Richard Madden chats William & Harry, prints and the artist formerly known as Prince to Company’s Holly Rains, you may be sensing a theme here…
THE TELEGRAPH.CO.UK. – Richard Madden and Lily James managed to wreck some of the practice dresses during Cinderella rehearsals. The Scottish actor takes on the role of Prince Kit in Kenneth Branagh’s live-action remake of the classic Disney telling, with Lily James in the title role of Cinderella.
Triple Oscar-winning designer Sandy Powell is behind the spectacular costumes, with Richard revealing how careful he was with her creations.
“I kind of always think there were three of us in this relationship; the prince and Cinderella and the dress,” Richard smiled to Cover Media. “So we had to learn a new technique of dance, which was kind of like skiing so you won’t destroy it. And we practised for a couple of months before Sandy would let us near the actual dress. We managed to tear up a couple of the practice ones in the process.”
Sandy has previously bagged golden statues for her work on The Young Victoria, The Aviator and Shakespeare in Love, so she is a pro at period costumes.
For Cinderella, Sandy blended different time periods in order to produce the fairytale outcome.
“For me it was 19th century, with a bit of 1940s and 1950s thrown in. Like for the stepmother [Cate Blanchett], I was looking at those, sort of, 1940s actresses like Marlene Dietrich, Joan Crawford. And when they were in films, made in the 1940s, set in the 19th century, how it all looked, it’s all a bit wrong – you can still see the 1940s, and I really liked that element for Cate,” she explained.
“And then for the sisters I went a decade higher and went to sort of 1950s versions of the 19th century.” (source)
HARPER’S BAZAAR – Richard Madden has a theory behind why he’s perennially cast in period pieces.
“I think it’s the curly hair,” he says in his thick Scottish accent with a twinkle in his eye, a plan forming in his mind. “Maybe I’ll shave my hair off and I’ll start getting modern parts all the time…”
This focus on his hirsuteness isn’t totally without cause; he’s currently promoting his new film Cinderella, in which he plays the squeaky clean, clean-shaven Prince Kit, an experience which he says involved “being shaved twice a day” by an on-set barber. The results make the constant hair removal worth it – he looks far younger than his 28 years and a million miles away from the role that made him famous, Robb Stark in HBO’s hit TV series Game of Thrones.
Unlike his co-star Lily James, Madden had precious little to work with in terms of his character; in the animated version, he doesn’t even have a name. This meant he had to work with director Kenneth Branagh to come up with a three-dimensional man with a back-story of his own.
“I focused on making him a friend, soldier and above anything else a son – Cinderella is primarily a daughter and so the prince was primarily a son,” he explains. “So I focused on that relationship with Derek Jacobi as my dad and brought out all these other elements of his character.”
Indeed, working with Jacobi was one of the highlights for Madden (“I love him to pieces”), while the rest of the stellar cast also made an impression on him.
“It was like a master-class everyday on that set with Cate [Blanchett], Kenneth [Branagh], Derek [Jacobi], Stellan [Skarsgard] and Helena [Bonham Carter]. You understand why they’re movie stars. It’s not just their acting; it’s how they behave when the camera’s not rolling. Ken and Cate have a real compassion and awareness of everyone else around them. You’d think being as successful as they are that they’d be really insular and only concerned with themselves, but it’s the opposite, they’re concerned with everyone. I learned a lot from them.”
His relationship with his on-screen love interest James and director Branagh must be particularly good; he’s signed up to work with them both again in a stage production of Romeo and Juliet.
“I can’t wait to work with Ken again,” he says. “That was a big pro for me doing this job. As soon as we started working on Cinderella I thought ‘I just want to Shakespeare with him’; that’s his ballgame. I’m thrilled to be doing that with him. As for Lily, she hates me, I know she does, but I love her and I’m just waiting for her to get sick of working with me.”
I inform him that his Wikipedia page tells me he’s played Romeo on the stage before (“Oh well if it’s on Wikipedia it must be true,” he quips). What does he think he’ll bring to the role now he’s older and wiser?
“Seven years of life experience,” he remarks. “I’ve actually got a work ethic now, I know there’s a craft to it. I won’t just be running around impulsively like I did when I was younger.”
Before treading the boards we’ll see him following in his television father Sean Bean’s footsteps, playing Mellors in an upcoming adaptation of Lady Chatterley’s Lover, as well as playing an American pickpocket opposite Idris Elba in Bastille Day. Both of which meet the criteria for picking his next roles: they’re not royalty.
“I’ve played a lot of royals,” he admits. “I might slow down on the royalty for a little while…” (source)

USA TODAY – It’s hard to fill a prince’s shoes onscreen, but it’s even more difficult fleshing out the famed Prince Charming from the animated 1950 classic Cinderella.
The royal task for Kenneth Branagh’s live-action take fell on Scottish actor Richard Madden — whose royal Robb Stark was gruesomely dispatched in 2013’s “Red Wedding” Game of Thrones episode.
“This search really began and ended with Richard,” says producer Alli Shearmur. “We needed inner strength and emotional intelligence. It’s crucial, since in the original, Prince Charming didn’t even have a last name.”
Here are five keys to Madden’s Prince Charming:
01. Sense of humor: Madden knew that his prince would have to relax his subjects by wielding a disarming sense of humor, which also shows humility and kindness.
“People are going to be nervous to meet him, so he had to have the quality of putting people at ease,” says Madden. “And it shows he can make fun of himself.”
02. Horsemanship: In this version, Prince Charming meets his Cinderella on horseback while hunting — almost performing a dance while circling each other on their steeds.
Madden had riding experience from Game of Thrones, but stepped up the dressage work. He also assisted his less horse-skilled co-star Lily James (Cinderella) who had to ride her steed bareback without reins.
“There was acting there and there was actually trying to stop her horse,” says Madden. “I would go up beside her and yank the horse to a stop. I was literally doing that.”
It looks perfect onscreen, but Madden admits there are outtakes of his horse simply drifting out of the camera shot. And he noticed the crew looked nervous that the horses would bolt through the filming set up. But there were no mishaps.
“I’m lucky to get jobs where I get these amazing film horses that make me look much better than I am,” he charmingly admits.
03. Sword presence: As Game Of Thrones’ Robb Stark, Madden used his sword much more. But the warrior-poet Prince Charming has his sword on his side too.
“He’s a soldier back from the war. It was good to keep that element running through it,” says Madden. “Even if he never felt the need to use it.”
04. Tight pants: This Prince Charming kept the royal britches on the historically correct tight-side, requiring wardrobe specialists to ensure that it did not show too much for Disney’s young audiences.
“You get used to it. But you do feel exposed all the time,” says Madden. “I am not used to wearing such tight trousers.”
05. Dancing: The royal ball is everything in Cinderella. So Madden had to step up his waltz game with lessons four times a week for four months.
“It doesn’t come naturally to me,” says Madden. “It was a mistake to deliberately miss those classes in grammar school. I thought, ‘I’m not good at this so why bother?’ I regretted that the moment I was cast.”
Madden was not even allowed near Cinderella’s actual ball dress until he could prove his dancing skills.
“I went through two practice dresses before they let me near the real one, they wanted to make sure I wouldn’t completely destroy it,” he says. “And I wanted to get it down, so I could focus on my acting and not my feet.”
The work paid off. The waltzing screen smile is real.
“When it finally came down to finally doing the dance, it was actually quite enjoyable,” he says. Charming. (source)
THE NEW YORK POST – When Richard Madden told his buds that he’d be playing Prince Charming in “Cinderella,” they laughed in his face. “Endlessly. They could not stop, and they made fun of me about it for a long time,” Madden tells The Post. “Then I actually brought them to London to the first screening, and after the film, they all had smiles ear to ear and puffy eyes from crying. So I got the last laugh there.”
In theaters from last Friday, Madden stars as the leading man in the live-action revamp of the 1950 Disney animated classic “Cinderella.”
Hailing from Scotland, the 28-year-old actor, who is dating “Doctor Who” actress Jenna Coleman, is best known for another royal role — as Robb Stark on “Game of Thrones.” His time on the show came to a bloody end in 2013 thanks to the now-infamous “Red Wedding.”
“It was traumatic [because] it was a long week of shooting that scene, and those were all my friends and, like, family — these people that I’ve spent a lot of time with,” he says.
Though he says that trauma isn’t responsible for his running in the opposite direction toward the squeaky-clean Disney flick, he does admit to welcoming the differences.
“I’m not going to lie,” he says. “It’s nice to be in something with a happy ending for a change!”
But for Madden, filming the fairy tale wasn’t as easy as the waving of a wand. He trained for months in dressage for his horseback scenes with a horse that he says “didn’t want to like” him. Then there were his skintight white pants that made him feel self-conscious and exposed. But the real monster was the ballroom dancing.
“I’m not a naturally gifted dancer, so I had to train my feet four days a week for about two months to try and learn these dances,” he says. “I had to do that before they let me near Cinderella’s dress so I didn’t destroy it with my feet. I destroyed two practice dresses completely,” he says.
Madden will next star in a West End production of “Romeo and Juliet” with his Cinderella, Lily James. He’s also shot the Paris-set thriller “Bastille Day” alongside Idris Elba. Now, he’d like to do a movie on a spaceship — or just anything but more dancing. (source)

LINDALEE ROSE – Lindalee discovers that Richard Madden’s girlfriend is none other than Jenna Coleman from TV’s Doctor Who, while conducting interviews at the Cinderella World Premiere in Hollywood.
FLAUNT MAGAZINE – If Richard Madden weren’t acting, he’d be a “shy, fat kid living in Scotland with no girlfriend,” he tells me. Far from Prince Charming, who the 28-year-old actor plays in Disney’s upcoming remake of Cinderella.
I find Madden sitting in the corner of Tiny’s & the Bar Upstairs, bundled in an overcoat and a turtleneck, drinking Kentucky Bourbon Ale on this bitter New York afternoon. He’s handsome and his Scottish accent is as thick and alluring as one might hope it to be (he pronounces “Great Dane” with a rolling R). For someone experienced in playing the role of a king and a prince, he is remarkably laid-back, modest, and almost bashful. He plays with his hands while speaking, and he lights up whenever I ask about Game of Thrones, in which he starred as Robb Stark, King in the North. He first joined youth theatre as a kid to overcome shyness and, in the process, discovered his passion. Today, with credits in theatre, film, and television, he seems to be constantly working.
“I think I’ve had nine different permanent residences in the past year,” he says.
Check the beautiful photoshoot Richard did for Flaunt Magazine in our gallery:
Richard was guest at the mexican talk show Despierta America to promote the film ‘Cinderella’ at Univision Studios. Several stills from his appearance have now been added to the gallery, enjoy (the cutie of Richard with a puppy!!)
VOLTURE – If you thought Cinderella’s tiny glass slippers were hard to fill, try walking a mile in Prince Charming’s polished shoes. It’s not easy to play a character that’s practically the Ur-prince of all fairy tales — handsome, chivalrous, and the personified projection of romantic longing — but in Kenneth Branagh’s new live-action adaptation of Cinderella, Richard Madden proves himself up to the task. We got the Game of Thrones alum on the phone to discuss how he pulled off all of his princely dancing scenes, how he feels about the HBO series now that he’s been killed off, and why he’s so obsessed with Doctor Who.
You often take on projects like Game of Thrones and Klondike that put you through some arduous paces. Does something like Cinderella, then, feel like a vacation?
You know, I got this job while I was shooting Klondike, and I said, “This is great. I’m not going to be covered in blood or mud, or carrying things for hours!” But actually, it was just as hard as both of them, just in a very different way. I had to work on it for months to get the dance choreography down, and I was doing a lot of scenes on horseback. You think something’s going to be easy, and it never is — you end up putting the same amount of effort and time into it.
COLLIDER VIDEOS – Prince Charming. In name alone, those are some big shoes to fill, but in Kenneth Branagh’s beautiful live-action adaptation of Disney’s animated classic Cinderella, Richard Madden does just that. Madden’s Prince is honorable, brave, never foppish, and indeed, quite charming. Cinderella also stars Lily James, Cate Blanchett, Richard Madden, Helena Bonham Carter, Stellan Skarsgard, Nonso Anozie, Holliday Grainger , Sophie McShera and Hayley Atwell, and opens in theaters March 13th.
At a recent Los Angeles press day, I sat down with Richard Madden for an exclusive video interview. We talked about why he wanted to take on the role of Prince Charming, the technical challenges of filming the grand ball, being immersed in the fairy tale environment, the film’s wonderful costume work by Sandy Powell, how Game of Thrones fans react when they see him on the street, and re-teaming with Branagh and James for a West End production of Romeo and Juliet in 2016. Please be aware there are major Game of Thrones spoilers. (source)

JUST JARED – Lily James and Richard Madden channel their inner Cinderella and Prince Charming in these new JustJared.com exclusive portrait session pictures.
The perfect pair star in the new live-action re-telling of the classic fairytale Cinderella, in theaters tomorrow! The movie is on track to have an amazing weekend at the box office, due in part to its stellar cast, which also includes Cate Blanchett, Helena Bonham Carter, and more.
Lily spoke about taking on the iconic role of Cinderella.
“Well obviously every girl wants to be a princess…the idea is just so magical. But on top of that, it’s a dream role because Cinderella is so special and kind and unique. Plus, we have a great opportunity to create a whole life beyond the fairytale, which is already so beautiful as it is, but making it richer and giving each character their own specific back stories,” Lily said. “And I liked the fact that Ken Branagh wanted to keep it light and magical, much like a fairytale.”
Richard commented on what he hopes audiences walk away with after seeing the film.
“I think the element of strength from unity is something audiences will definitely respond to. This is a story about two people coming together who actually bring out the best in one another, and from that love comes strength. Hopefully audiences will leave the theater understanding just how powerful love is,” Richard said. (source)

VANITY FAIR – If Cinderella’s Richard Madden (formerly known as Game of Thrones’s Robb Stark) could choose between a direwolf and a fairy godmother, what would he pick? Direwolf, hands down. “It’s a massive, giant bear wolf. Why wouldn’t I want that?” So he wouldn’t be swayed by being able to wish for whatever you wanted? Not at all. “That’s good, but the direwolf would stay around a bit longer.”
Both Madden and his co-star Lily James were at Saks Fifth Avenue yesterday, celebrating the department store’s collaboration with Disney on a Cinderella-inspired shoe collection, which features dazzling work from Jimmy Choo, Nicholas Kirkwood, Charlotte Olympia, Salvatore Ferragamo, and more. (James and Madden are also in Saks’s spring catalog cover models). It was a landmark day for Saks Fifth Avenue, said Chief Marketing and Creative Officer Mark Briggs, “for the collaboration with the shoe designers, which I think have excelled in beautiful, beautiful designs.”
James had a strategic approach for what she would ask from her fairy godmother. “I would wish for 100 more wishes,” she told us, laughing. What would one of those wishes be? “I want every single one of these shoes,” she said, eyeing a particularly bedazzled pair of Jimmy Choos.
Cinderella, which opens March 13, is being heralded for a modern take on the centuries-old fairy tale, without sacrificing its traditional roots. James has no problem playing rebellious ladies—her character on Downton Abbey, Lady Rose, flouts societal norms left and right. She certainly wasn’t interested in making Ella seem like a pushover. “I wanted her to be a strong character. I wanted her to have beauty that radiated from within,” she said. “Just because she doesn’t have a sword or she’s not openly strong in that way, physically, she’s just as inspirational.” Does she see any similarities between Lady Rose and Ella? “I think they are both free spirits and they’ve both got big hearts.”
Madden knew his Prince Charming had to keep up with James’s portrayal. “I wanted to bring an equality to it,” he said of playing Prince Charming. “I wanted to make Cinderella and the prince equals and try to make a man that was worthy of the affections of someone like Cinderella.”
MOVIEFONE – Chances are you know Richard Madden from his role on HBO’s acclaimed fantasy series “Game of Thrones.” As one of the members of the besieged Stark clan, Madden stood tall while facing certain death. That’s a tough thing to play, especially when you’re so handsome.
Madden is bringing his handsomeness and his history with fantasy to Disney’s new, live-action “Cinderella,” directed by Kenneth Branagh, and co-starring Lily James and Cate Blanchett. In this version, Madden plays a kinder, gentler Prince Charming, one that Cinderella actually meets before the ball. Yes, there are complex new dimensions to this “Cinderella.” And it is glorious.
We got on the phone and spoke to Madden about what it was like going from dark fantasy to light fantasy (and what the reaction was to “Game of Thrones'” infamous Red Wedding), whether or not it was fun to play with fairy tale conventions, and grill him on his jock strap (he recently went on “Jimmy Kimmel Live” to discuss). He also tells us that he’s dying to be in a movie with spaceships or dinosaurs or both. Struggling Hollywood screenwriters, you have your newest assignment.
POP SUGAR – The stars of Cinderella, Lily James and Richard Madden, stopped by our LA studios ahead of this weekend’s release of the film to talk about taking on the fairy-tale characters. THE HOLLYWOOD REPORTER – Coincidentally, Cinderella star Lily James celebrated International Women’s Day by relishing in the courage and agency of her refreshed Disney princess.
“This Cinderella is a really powerful, strong character — I wanted to bring a strength of spirit to the role,” James, wearing a Dolce and Gabbana outfit with Stuart Weitzman heels, told The Hollywood Reporter before a Sunday afternoon screening at New York City’s Tribeca Grand Hotel.
Madden added of Kenneth Branagh’s modern take, “This young woman in distress doesn’t need a man to save her. That’s totally irrelevant — she’d be fine without the prince, she’d get on with it.” Plus, his spin on Prince Charming includes a “sense of humor — the ability to make fun of himself and have a bit of banter with his dad.”
James was overjoyed about the recent announcement of Disney’s live-action Beauty and the Beast, starring fellow Downton Abbey breakout Dan Stevens opposite Emma Watson. “I’m so excited he’s playing the beast! I couldn’t believe it, I texted him immediately,” she said. Madden’s advice for playing such a beloved character? “Practice your dancing, because you’re gonna have to do it at some point!”
Disney has Beauty and the Beast (also featuring Luke Evans) following Cinderella and Maleficent in starring British actors (or at least accents, in Maleficent’s case). When asked about what it is about the U.K. that seems to make these live-action retellings inherently magical, James told THR, “I don’t know! It’s weird! [On set,] there was a sense of theater of company, of epic storytelling in an intimate nature. I don’t know whether British actors are more theater?”
Richard Madden guessed it might have to do with the European roots of the stories themselves. “Maybe it’s just because it goes back further — fairytales are just bred in us. Or maybe it’s just coincidence! I don’t think it’s deliberate.”
The stars’ close friend Matthew Goode, who brought his daughter to the screening, had a hypothesis on the topic. “Good on the Brits, yes! It’s because of the wild, imaginative people that the Brits are,” he joked THR while grabbing more popcorn for his family. “I think it’s merely because we’re cheap — that can be the only reason, because there’s so many good American actors!”

ZAP2IT – Former “Game of Thrones” star and current “Cinderella” Prince Charming Richard Madden is desperate to work on a science fiction project, but don’t expect him to mix his personal life and professional one any time soon. Though he’s been dating “Doctor Who” lead Jenna Coleman for several years, Madden says he doesn’t want to make an appearance on the BBC series — at least for the time being.
“That would probably be weird,” Madden admits to Zap2it while promoting “Cinderella.” “I’d love to be in ‘Doctor Who’ one day, but maybe not while Jenna’s in the show.”
Madden already has tackled fantasy thanks to “Thrones,” played a Disney prince in “Cinderella” and is heading to the stage in 2016. He’s also starring in the 2016 modern day action flick “Bastille Day” opposite Idris Elba, which means he’s already showcased a range of his talents.
When asked what he’d like to dabble in next, Madden admits he wants “to keep working and doing things I’ve not done before” — and that’s where his love for sci-fi comes into play. He says his dream science fiction project would be “future sci-fi stuff, like laser ships, space guns,” and his current sci-fi obsession is Halle Berry’s CBS series “Extant.”
Though “Doctor Who” certainly falls under the “future sci-fi stuff” category, Madden confirms “there’s nothing in the pipeline for that at the moment.” “Maybe one day,” he concedes.

Richard talks about being in the infamous red wedding scene on “Game of Thrones.”
Richard talks about playing Prince Charming in Cinderella and he reveals that he had some difficulty with his very tight costume.
Today, in the buzzing Tribeca eatery Benvenuto Cafe, right next door to his hotel, the 28-year-old London-based actor isn’t dressed like a pristine prince. Speaking past a careful amount of stubble, and wearing a fitted navy peacoat, tight black jeans, and scuffed-up white Chucks, he looks like your average downtown New Yorker, with just two major differences: Madden, a native of Elderslie, the mile-wide village outside of Glasgow, Scotland, speaks in a textured brogue. Also, a small congregation of men with cameras are waiting for him to finish his grilled chicken sandwich and head outside. He’s a long way—seven kingdoms in fact—from Winterfell, where Madden held court for three seasons as Robb Stark, King of the North, on HBO’s fantasy saga, Game of Thrones.
Madden’s blossoming fame—something he’s still adjusting to—is what happens when the show you booked at 22 years old becomes a global phenomenon, and you just happen to be playing an incorruptible good guy in a world where moral ambiguity reigns supreme. “Being in other countries was when I realized Games of Thrones was so big, because in my head I just shot a little TV show in Ireland,” Madden says. “You’re walking around in Paris or Rome and strangers want to take a selfie with you, and you’re like, ‘Oh shit, this is kind of big.’”

Richard Madden opens up about just how Cinderella and her Prince Charming get together, and how they rely on each other to free them from the restrictions in their lives in the forthcoming adaptation by director Kenneth Branagh and screenwriter Chris Weitz.
It’s nice to see modern big screen fairytale re-tellings looking at relationships in a much more equal way. Rather than princesses of late being swept of their feet by proverbial knights in shining armour, they’re coming together while fighting for justice in their own lives. You had ‘Snow White and the Huntsman’, which saw a clear romance forming between the two title characters as they worked together to lead an army, and then there is, of course, ‘Frozen’ which saw bravery on the part of both Anna and her faithful quest companion Kristoff. Now ‘Cinderella’ brings together two souls, who must help each other escape the prison of their families.
‘I think [Prince Charming] goes through a huge change from the start’, Richard Madden says of his character. ‘From when he meets her and with what happens with his father during the film and how he learns to be his own man and to stand up against things he doesn’t agree with.’ It certainly seems that the Prince is less authoritative than his status allows him, with him struggling to overcome the King’s demands of his love life. Meanwhile, Cinderella (played by ‘Downton Abbey”s Lily James) is being forced to scrub her own home from top to bottom by her evil stepmother Lady Tremaine (Cate Blanchett) and her hideous daughters (in case you didn’t already know the story).
‘You take these two characters and you take the best qualities that are within them and over the course of the film you see these qualities be pushed and tested’, Madden continues. ‘The connection they have with each other, even though they’re far apart, brings those best qualities out.’ (source)
This March comes a new vision of the timeless legend.
According to the ABC site, Richard will be guest on Jimmy Kimmel Live! next week, on Thursday 26th together with Viola Davis.

A beautiful Cinderella exibithion has been held at the 65th Berlin International Film Festival for the after party of the premiere. Several photos from the event have been added to the gallery!
I found a YouTube clip of you in your first movie, Complicity—it is heavy subject matter!
I’ve not seen that in years. That was my first role—I was 11. I play a boy who gets raped. My mother has a great picture of me lying on the ground in between takes with this massive man on top of me. That was a kind of baptism by fire into the world of pretending.
So, the Red Wedding in Game of Thrones. Did it leave the set completely covered in fake blood?
It was carnage. I was also wearing this tunic with a hose that came up from my ankle to my chest and when I got stabbed, the blood was supposed to burst out of me. But during the first take the hole was misaligned so I got a few liters of blood inside my costume. And that stuff dyes your skin!
Was it a grueling scene to act?
It took five days and every one was torturous. The last day of shooting was also the last shoot of season 3, so literally at the end of that day I was finished with Game of Thrones. At that point I’d been with the same crew for five years. I saw my onscreen mother more than my actual mother. It was really emotional.
What were things like behind the scenes?
Most of the time we were filming in really miserable, cold locations, and the subject matter is not particularly upbeat. There were funny moments, though. You’ve got a bunch of men all trying to be very manly and tough and then, as soon as they’d shout cut, everyone would drop to the ground and lie down because the costumes were so heavy. A lot of jokes also ended up being directed toward Kit [Harrington], after he broke his ankle, drunk one night. So you had Jon Snow in a massive leg cast. We’d be in these woods that were muddy and a mess and two people would have to carry Kit onto set and prop him up on one leg beside me. We’d go through a scene. Then, cut, and he’d have to get carried off again to the next set.
There’s a lot of pretty elaborate dancing.
Oh, god. We had three proper dance sequences within that ball scene. I was dancing three days a week just rehearsing and rehearsing, so that when we got to shooting the scene I wouldn’t have that look of fear on my face.
Cinderella’s dress is so big!
It is humungous. You have no idea. During rehearsals we went through quite a few copy dresses. I spilled coffee on one. And poor Lily. I couldn’t complain about having to trip over it, because she was the one having to carry it.
There’s also that scene where she’s on a swing and you reach in and grab her foot. Was it hard to find it under all that dress?
I think we made it look elegant on the day, but in reality there were like 80 layers to get through. I was terrified the swing was going to come forward and I would be engulfed by a dress and suffocated beneath it.

The production will play at the Garrick Theatre in the Spring of 2016 and reunites the pair who worked with Branagh on the new live-action Disney blockbuster, Cinderella.
The production will be launched at the Garrick in October and forms part of a season of three productions in the West End helmed by Branagh. The season will also include a production of Shakespeare’s The Winter’s Tale, which Branagh will direct before taking to the stage himself in a revival of John Osborne’s post-war drama The Entertainer, directed by Rob Ashford. Sixty-five years after Walt Disney released the animated film Cinderella, the beloved fairy tale is heading back to the big screen on March 13 as an epic, live-action romance. Costume designer Sandy Powell drew inspiration from the 19th century and the 1950s to reimagine the looks of characters from the classic cartoon for director Kenneth Branagh’s remake.
“I wanted the costumes to be bold and have an explosion of color as if it were a picture book,” says Powell, 54, a three-time Oscar winner. “But at the same time, I wanted the clothes to be true to each character and believable.” In a fairy tale movie, as you might imagine, “believable” can be stretched. Powell’s work on Cinderella included an twelve-layer ball gown, a single dress that took more than 550 hours to make, and eight pairs of shoes made of Swarovski crystal—none of which were ever worn by Cinderella herself.
For the Prince’s wedding-day attire, Powell chose a military aesthetic similar to the animated character, but with tailoring from the 1950s thrown in. “The silhouette and the shape of the shoulders is from the original animation,” she says. “But we created more of a fitted look and dressed him in less masculine colors such as blue, green, and white.” The wool military jacket, which was dyed a light blue to accentuate Madden’s eyes, boasts gold bullion and crystal-sequenced braids that were hand embroidered in Pakistan. The British are indeed coming, and Jason Bell is helping to orchestrate the charge. The London-born photographer, whose work appears frequently in Vanity Fair, had the idea to shoot an all-U.K. edition of the magazine’s annual Hollywood portfolio after observing that “this British invasion of Hollywood has gotten so out of hand.”
For the first time ever, this year’s 30-page portfolio—featuring no fewer than 44 Blighty icons, from Eddie Redmayne to Dame Judi Dench—comes accompanied by a short film, directed by Bell and viewable right here on VF.com. The film, told in three parts, depicts the Brits “Preparing for War”, then “Coming to America” to infiltrate the film industry. Given the number of British actors nominated for Academy Awards this year, the title of the third film should come as no surprise: “Victory Is Assured.” (source)

Added in the gallery, some pics of Richard filming Bastille Day in Paris on November 5th. Enjoy them!
Thanks to StormShadow.TV we have a video of Richard filming Bastille Day in Paris from November 5th.
Principal photography is underway on Bastille Day, an action thriller starring Idris Elba that is being directed by James Watkins (The Woman in Black). The shoot will continue in Paris for four weeks before moving to London until mid-December.
The story centres on a rogue CIA agent in Paris who teams up with a con artist to thwart a terror attack.
It has been written by Andrew Baldwin, currently writing the next film in the Bourne franchise for Universal, and John Hodge (Trainspotting, The Beach).
Other cast includes Richard Madden, Charlotte Le Bon, Kelly Reilly and Jose Garcia.
Set on the eve of Bastille Day (July 14), young French woman Zoe (Charlotte Le Bon) intends to plant a bomb in Paris to make a radical political statement without hurting anyone but changes her mind at the last moment.
However, when US pickpocket Michael Mason (Richard Madden) steals her bag and dumps it at a busy Metro stop, he becomes the prime suspect when the bomb explodes.
Meanwhile, deskbound CIA agent Sean (Idris Elba) fresh from war in the Middle East becomes determined to find him Michael bring him into custody before the French authorities do – connecting Sean, Zoe and Michael in a race against time.
After playing the King in the North in “Game of Thrones,” Richard Madden is now ready to go on the run with Idris Elba in his next project.
Madden is set to co-star with Elba in the Focus Features action-thriller “Bastille Day.” James Watkins will direct from a script by Andrew Baldwin.
StudioCanal is financing “Bastille Day” and will distribute it in France, Germany, the U.K., New Zealand and Australia, and is selling the rest of the world.
Philippe Rousselet is producing the project via his Vendome Pictures banner, along with Steve Golin, David Kanter and Bard Dorros for Anonymous Content.
Developed by Anonymous Content, the movie follows a rogue U.S. CIA operative who is tasked with interrogating and eventually making a young American man, who’s also a con-artist, “disappear” in order to avoid embarrassment to the U.S. government after the American is linked as the prime suspect to an attack on the Paris metro.
After several more attacks, the operative realizes the young American is innocent and may be the only link to the person actually orchestrating the terrorist attacks.

BBC One has announced the cast for its upcoming adaptation of “Lady Chatterley’s Lover,” the 1928 Italian romance novel by D.H. Lawrence.
Holliday Grainger, who starred in Showtime’s “The Borgias” and A&E’s recent miniseries “Bonnie & Clyde,” will play the title role, with “Game of Thrones” star Richard Madden playing gamekeeper Oliver Mellors. James Norton, who appears in BBC One’s “Happy Valley,” will play Lady Chatterley’s war-wounded husband Sir Clifford Chatterley.
The novel was considered highly controversial at the time of its publication due to its explicit sexual content, and a trial was held in Britain in 1960 to determine if the book fell under the country’s Obscene Publications Act. It appears in an episode of “Mad Men” as well, with Joan Holloway’s possession of the book causing a stir in the office due to its erotic content.
The 90-minute drama will be written and directed by Jed Mercurio and produced by Hartswood Films in association with Serena Cullen Productions. (source)
Unlike Robert Stromberg’s “Maleficent,” or Chis Buck and Jennifer Lee’s “Frozen,” or Sam Raimi’s “Oz the Great and Powerful,” Kenneth Branagh’s “Cinderella” will apparently not wander too far from “Cendrillon,” the original 1697 fairy tale written by Charles Perrault. However, unlike previous film adaptations of the classic story, according to MoviePilot, this forthcoming movie will unfold from the uniquely new point of view of Kit, the Prince Charming.
The “Prince Charming” character will be played by Richard Madden who is best known for his sensitive portrayal of “Rob Stark” in the hit TV series, “Game of Thrones.” Aside from him, the movie will be headlined by Cate Blanchette as the wicked stepmother “Lady Tremaine” and Lily James in the title role. Others in the cast include Holliday Grainger and Sophie McSherra as Cinderella’s wicked stepsisters “Anastacia” and “Drizella,” respectively, Helena Bonham Carter as the “Fairy Godmother,” Stellan Skarsgard as the “Grand Duke,” Derek Jacobi as the “King,” Nonzo Anosie as the “Captain,” and Hayley Atwell and Ben Chaplin as Cinderella’s mother and father, respectively.
In addition to the uniquely new perspective in the way the story will be told, Branagh’s “Cinderella” will reportedly also offer some refreshing script writing talent and some really fascinating cinematography. Eric Eisenberg of Cinema Blend, who was among those who got to watch the special screening of some of the film’s footage during CinemaCon, said, “While we were told before the footage that some of the special effects had yet to be completed and that the movie is still very much a work in process, I was definitely impressed by what I saw. There is an interesting mix of tones at work, as heavy drama is lightened by some funny dialogue and rapport, and the film looks gorgeously shot. Of course, this is the footage that Disney wanted us to see in order to get us excited for the film, but my interest is definitely piqued.”
The screenplay was written by Aline Brosh McKenna and Chris Weitz while cinematography was done by Haris Zambarloukos. Musical scoring was by Patrick Doyle. The Walt Disney film will hit theaters screens worldwide on March 13, 2015. (source)

Richard Madden on going to extreme lengths during filming and watching Game of Thrones without the danger of being killed off
You come from Elderslie, a town between Glasgow and Paisley. Since Game of Thrones you’ve probably become the most famous son after William Wallace. Can you beat him?
My next challenge! But how can I be more famous than Mel Gibson?
The Red Wedding in Game of Thrones shocked the world. As an actor, did you feel a sense of achievement?
Most important was how we managed to keep it such a surprise. It’s in the book, it’s on the internet and so many people didn’t know it was going to happen.
Are you looking forward to watching series four not having to worry about who’s out to kill you?
I could not be more excited. When you’re in it, you read the scripts so many times, you know what’s going to happen inside out. I’ve got the joy of just being a viewer this time.
Are there any similarities between Game of Thrones and your new show Klondike?
It’s a story of your humanity and morality, how you survive when stakes couldn’t be higher and everything is life and death all day everyday.
It’s set during the Gold Rush?
On paper it’s about two guys that go up to the Yukon during the Gold Rush to make their fortune in 1897. It’s just a really great drama focusing on human beings in extreme situations.
Did you get in any extreme situations while filming?
I probably nearly died a couple of times. I did all my own stunts, threw myself into category four river rapids, got frostbite on my face. That hurt.
What’s the cure for frostbite on your face?
Lotions and potions. Filming Game of Thrones seemed tropical by the end of Klondike.
The character you play, Bill Haskell, was a real person. What did you find out about him?
I found out a lot about his strength. You had to be a warrior just to get to where they went. He was a man who never took the easy option. When there’s murder and greed and violence, at the point where anyone of us would become an animal and stab someone in the back or slit a man’s throat to save yours, there was that beautiful bit of humanity.
It’s like you’re describing modern day Paisley.
Exactly that. You don’t know what’s going to happen next.
Next up for you is Disney’s live action Cinderella. Prince Charming no less…
He’s a character that everyone has a conception of but what do we know about him? I’m trying to make him true and honest within a fairytale context. I need to pull my weight – there are some big players in that film: Derek Jacobi, Helena Bonham Carter, Cate Blanchett plays the evil stepmother.
A slightly better cast than your average pantomime.
Although that’s what I thought it was when I got it through on my email, a panto in Poole then I realised, actually Kenneth Branagh is directing. Oh right, ok. I’ll read it then.
Will Richard Madden buckle under the pressure? Watch the Klondike star in our quick-fire 60 second interview!
It looks like Fox’s reboot of “The Fantastic Four” is getting closer to finalizing its cast.
Sources tell Variety that Simon Kinberg has finished rewriting the script and that the studio plans to begin testing thesps for the roles of Reed Richards (aka Mister Fantastic) and Sue Storm (aka the Invisible Woman) by the end of the month.
Teller was asked Tuesday in an interview at Sundance if he would be playing Richards. He replied that, “Yeah that should be happening in the next few weeks,” making it seem like the actor was already on board. But sources say the actor was misunderstood and that he is testing but isn’t the frontrunner or officially attached. Other actors expected to test for the part include “Game of Thrones’” Kit Harington and Richard Madden.
Kate Mara and Saoirse Ronan are expected to test for Sue Storm. Michael B. Jordan is attached to play Johnny Storm, but he is expected to test with the actors to see which group has the best chemistry.
Josh Trank is on board to direct the pic with Kinberg, Matthew Vaughn and Gregory Goodman serving as producers.
“The Fantastic Four” is slated to bow June 19, 2015.
Richard Madden has revealed how he risked life and limb to recreate the Klondike gold rush.
The Scot had to escape an avalanche by running towards it while filming the series, his first in North America.
And he was left hanging off a 9000ft mountain by a rope in a blizzard.
The former Game of Thrones star was thrown into raging rapids as he rafted down a river. And during filming of the epic Klondike, which premiered in the US two days ago, cameras froze at -38C.
Richard, who grew up in Elderslie, Renfrewshire, said: “It’s the hardest thing I’ve ever had to do. Klondike shows humans in the rawest form, where the stakes are literally life or death every day. Things are out of your control and how you react defines you as a person.”
Richard, 27, plays adventurer Bill Haskell, who escapes life behind a desk to join the 1890s Klondike gold rush to find fortune and love with entrepreneur Belinda Mulrooney, played by Abbie Cornish.
Richard’s most frightening moment came as they were filming above the clouds.
He said: “At that altitude, the air is so thin you can’t breathe but we were having to run uphill towards an avalanche – for shelter. We were at our limits physically. I always try to be as fit as I can but this was definitely the most physical job I have ever had to do.”
The actors were roped together, hanging off a mountain and buffeted by a blizzard while saying their lines, .
Richard – who is dating Doctor Who’s Jenna-Louise Coleman – said: “As an actor, you don’t have to pretend – you are simply in the elements the character is experiencing. We were at the end of our tether. The weather has been brutal and there were points when we were on a frozen lake where the cold was intense, reinforced by four huge snow machines – so the snow was really hitting you in the face.”
Klondike was shot in Alberta, Canada, and part way through, the location had to be evacuated after flooding.
At one stage, Richard – who is being tipped for Hollywood stardom after winning the part of Prince Charming in Disney’s Cinderella opposite Downton Abbey’s Lily James – had to throw himself into dangerous river rapids.
The actor, who played Robb Stark in Game of Thrones, said: “I tried to convince myself that it’s just a big set and they can turn off these river rapids whenever they wanted.”
Executive producer on the six-hour series was Aliens director Ridley Scott. He said: “Shooting at minus 20C and even -38C, it is stultifyingly hard.”
