Marvel’s next big superhero movie, “Eternals,” is in theaters only on November 5.

Ten new character portraits showcase Salma Hayek, Angelina Jolie, Kumail Nanjiani, and more cast.

Get to know them before the film’s release next month.

“Game of Thrones” star Richard Madden plays Ikaris, another leader of the Eternals.

Ikaris can fly and shoot beams of cosmic energy from his eyes. Here, his character has a romance with Sersi.

In the comics, Ikaris goes undercover as a human named Ike Harris (very subtle).

In Marvel comics lore, Ikaris (Richard Madden) is the father of the Icarus, the character from Greek Mythology who flies too close to the sun with his magical wings. After his son died, Ikaris took his name and his original name has never been revealed. He has extreme physical abilities, even compared to other Eternals. He’s faster, stronger, able to withstand intense temperatures and force. It’s practically impossible to wear him out or injure him. Though he also possesses psychic abilities, he is not as adept as his counterparts in those areas. Ikaris and Sersi have been in love for many lifetimes, but the presence of the Black Knight in Eternals poses a problem for the couple. And as the end of the trailer suggests, he’s not known for his humility.

The film gives an all new meaning to “dysfunctional family.”

COLLIDER: Marvel’s newest film, Eternals, is set to deal with a universe far wider than MCU fans have ever imagined before. With the film’s cast of characters being the strongest the cinematic universe has ever seen, the new story (directed by Academy Award winner Chloé Zhao) will take fans to all-new, fantastic heights — including the beginning of the Marvel universe as we know it, according to an all-new featurette.

The new video, featuring soundbites from the film’s cast and crew, highlights the true enormity of Eternals’ story, moving beyond the Avengers and into something far bigger and more important than a band of earthbound superheroes. According to Kevin Feige, president of Marvel Studios and producer on Eternals, the new film is set to not only explore the Eternals’ connection to humanity, but also the world they live in, and how it (and they) came to be:

“Eternals explores the very creation of the Marvel universe itself. The Eternals are these remarkably super-powered characters, but also a dysfunctional family unit, [and] the person to bring that together was Academy Award winner Chloé Zhao. The impact the Eternals have on the MCU will be nothing less than redefining the cinematic universe entirely.”

Set to deal with the aftermath of Avengers: Endgame and the world left behind after the Avengers undid Thanos’s snap, Zhao wants the film’s focus to be on her characters, these overpowered marvels (pun intended) who have fallen in love with humanity and are learning to cope with what has happened to them in this traumatic aftermath. Audiences are set to go on “emotional journeys with these Eternals”, she says, “To figure out who they are and what it means to be human.”

Eternals stars Angelina Jolie, Gemma Chan, Richard Madden, Kit Harrington, Kumail Nanjiani, Salma Hayek, and Brian Tyree Henry, with a script from Patrick Burleigh and Ryan and Kaz Firpo. The film will premiere exclusively in theaters on November 5. Check out the full video below:

Gemma Chan, Richard Madden, Angelina Jolie, Salma Hayek, Kumail Nanjiani, and more break down their immortal characters.

Ikaris (Richard Madden)

Madden’s Ikaris is one of the most powerful Eternals, with the ability to fly and shoot beams of light from his eyes. He has a special connection with Sersi, but they don’t necessarily see eye to eye on their approach toward humanity. Still, they have a complicated, on-again off-again relationship that’s stretched throughout the centuries. “There’s a deep level of romance in two people that have been around for thousands of years and yet still choose each other,” Madden says.

For the Game of Thrones alum, one of the biggest challenges of playing an immortal superhuman was figuring out how he’s evolved over the last 7,000 years. “I had to work out, how do you play someone who’s seen everything and done everything?” Madden explains. “How do you play them to not be bored of everything because you’re seen it and done it?”

Richard Madden has powered through lockdown with a raft of new film, TV and podcasting projects, with a lead role in Chloé Zhao’s Marvel movie, Eternals, front and centre. It’s a superhero film like nothing you’ve seen before, says Madden…

BRITISH GQ: Richard Madden isn’t in the habit of sitting around doing nothing. Earlier this year, Madden found himself quarantining in an LA hotel room ahead of reshoots for his upcoming Marvel vehicle Eternals. Naturally, it was boring. Some actors would have sat around living off room service for ten days and bingeing TV; others might have ignored the quarantine rules entirely only to find themselves shamed on the front pages of gossip sites and industry magazines. But not Madden. “I kind of have a guilt if I’ve got time to be doing something and I’m not,” explains Madden.

Rather than sitting around doing nothing, he had recording equipment sent to his room and began putting in eight-hour shifts recording a sci-fi podcast series called From Now, playing the only survivor of a lost space mission that returns, unexpectedly, to earth 35 years after it left. His fellow Scot Brian Cox, recently of Succession fame but also an eminent actor in his own right, voiced Madden’s brother in the series; Cox laid down his parts from New York and the two occasionally worked together over FaceTime. “Sometimes we had to stop because the cleaners were vacuuming in the hall,” Madden recalls, “and there’s no vacuuming in space.”

This is amazing!!

DEADLINE- EXCLUSIVE: Amazon Studios has won rights to adapt QCode sci-fi podcast series, From Now, as a TV series. Golden Globe winners Richard Madden (Game Of Thrones) and Brian Cox (Succession) will serve as executive producers.

The podcast series, which stars Cox and Madden, debuted in late December 2020 and peaked at number two overall in the Apple Podcast charts.

Madden and Cox play identical twin brothers separated by time. The story chronicles the aftermath of their historic reunion when astronaut Edward Fitz’s (Madden) spacecraft suddenly reappears in Earth’s orbit after having gone missing 35 years earlier — and Edward emerges looking the exact same age as when he left.

The podcast was created by Rhys Wakefield, who starred in season three of HBO’s True Detective and William Day Frank, who produced the 2019 comedy thriller Berserk, directed by Wakefield. The duo will adapt the series for TV.

Madden, Cox, Wakefield, and Frank will serve as executive producers. Rob Herting and Dave Henning will executive-produce on behalf of QCode. Brian Kavanaugh-Jones, Fred Berger, Justin Levy will executive produce under their Automatik banner.

Madden, who is currently shooting the Russo brothers’ global thriller series Citadel for Amazon, will next be seen in Chloe Zhao’s film The Eternals, which is set for a Nov 2021 release from Disney. Cox is currently shooting season three of HBO hit Succession and writing his autobiography, which will be published in October in the UK and in 2022 in the U.S.
