Romeo and Juliet at the Garrick

GARRICK THEATRE – Shakespeare’s classic romantic tragedy Romeo and Juliet will play at the Garrick Theatre from May 2016 as part of the Kenneth Branagh Theatre Company season. Richard Madden and Lily James will play the star-crossed lovers, alongside Derek Jacobi as the hot-tempered Mercutio. Kenneth Branagh will direct this production, which will be the fourth to appear in his much-anticipated collection of shows at the Garrick.

Romeo and Juliet will reunite James and Madden, who played Cinderella and Prince Charming in Branagh’s 2015 film Cinderella. Madden is best known for his performance as Robb Stark in Game of Thrones and his recent appearance in BBC One’s drama Lady Chatterley’s Lover. James made her name as Lady Rose in Downton Abbey and has played in a variety of stage productions. Associate director Rob Ashford and designer Christopher Oram will also be involved in this production.

A heart-breaking tale of young love, Romeo and Juliet is one of Shakespeare’s most famous works and is regularly performed across the world. It tells the tale of two families locked in a feud, the Capulets and the Montagues. Romeo is the hot-blooded son of the Montagues, and Juliet the beautiful teenage daughter of the Capulets. After meeting at a masquerade ball, the pair fall instantly in love but their forbidden coupling has devastating and fatal consequences.

It has been commented that the choice of stage and screen veteran Derek Jacobi as the young, hot-tempered Mercutio will challenge the standard view of the playing age of Shakespeare characters. In a time where gender is constantly challenged within Shakespeare productions, such as an all-female Titus Andronicus, it will be very interesting to see the effects of playing with the age of the characters.

Romeo and Juliet promises to be a wonderful piece of theatre and will run at the Garrick Theatre from May 12th 2016 to August 13th 2016. (source)

THE STAGE – Actors Richard Madden and Jeremy Irvine, writer Jake Brunger and director Jessica Swale are among the figures coming together for a new festival hosted by the Old Vic.

The festival is being held in celebration of the 11th anniversary of the Old Vic New Voices initiative, and will bring established actors, writers and directors together with new talent nurtured through the scheme.

Featuring new work by British and American playwrights and a new musical, the programme will run from June 19 to July 24 on the Old Vic’s main stage.

New musical The Natives, written by Cat Jones and Matthew Booth and directed by Jamie Jackson, will take place on June 30.

Brunger’s Four Play will be directed by Jack Sain and will run on June 26, while Swale will direct Steven Hevey’s Sirius on July17.

Other performers involved in the festival include Pippa Haywood, Carly Bawden and Marc Elliot, while directors Derek Bond, Alice Hamilton and Caroline Byrne will also be involved.

The programme also include new work by Lucinda Burnett, Thomas Bradshaw and Nessah Muthy.

As part of the festival, a new play by James Baldwin, called Match Fit, will visit schools across London from June 22 to July 17.

The festival is funded by the TS Eliot Estate and Arts Council England.

ACE theatre director Neil Darlison said: “The chance to create new work that will be showcased on the Old Vic’s stage is an exciting opportunity for the participating playwrights. The Old Vic New Voices programme has supported a diverse range of young artists and innovative projects over recent years and the new festival element will help to build on the success achieved to date.”

The festival will be free to attend, with tickets available via a lottery. (source)

WHATSONSTAGE – Kenneth Branagh will direct and star in a year-long season of plays at the Garrick Theatre, opening in October with The Winter’s Tale co-starring Judi Dench.

The season, which marks Branagh’s first return to the West End since his acclaimed performance in Michael Grandage’s revival of Ivanov in 2008, will also feature Harlequinade, The Painkiller (with Rob Brydon), Romeo and Juliet (starring Richard Madden and Lily James) and The Entertainer (with Branagh as Archie Rice).

Branagh told WhatsOnStage that all the productions featured in the season – tickets for which go on sale at 9am on Friday (17 April) – have been “long-standing passions”.

“I felt as though a moment was approaching whereby some of this work could come together,” he said. “Finally, Nica Burns, who I worked with many years ago at the Donmar, suggested the Garrick, where we could do both intimate and epic stuff, and it suddenly became possible.”

[…]

It’s followed by Romeo and Juliet (12 May to 13 August 2016), starring, as previously tipped, Richard Madden and Lily James, who Branagh recently directed on screen in Disney’s Cinderella, in the title roles.

Branagh, who directs, said that Madden and James are both “wildly excited” to reunite in the production and have “earned the right to do it”, considering they both have classical experience (James in Othello, Madden in the Globe’s Romeo and Juliet). He added that he hopes the production will attract “new audiences”. (source)
